This is great! I'ts gotten that when I open a ride report and see another tall bike with rectangular panniers and knobby tires I just skip it. The road less traveled is always more interesting. So bring on the Harleys, Ninja 250s and other offbeat travel bikes.

I am looking forward to reading your RR. I have wanted to ride the Pampa and Patagonia for years so I will just read along for now.

Happy end of the world!

So I'm getting on a boat tomorrow for 10 days and won't be updating during that time. I'll try to find some time later today to actually get into the South America part of the trip, but here's something to whet your appetites

back to the past

I landed in Santiago on November 27th, so I'm a little behind on the story. I had about a week and a half before the bike would arrive so I busied myself with cervesas and completos. I met some great people, hiked up a glacier, took 3 days of intensive Spanish, and had some sort of viral chest infection. I met a brit named Mat who intended to buy a Honda 125 and ride it to Vancouver. After a drunken night of karaoke we vowed to ride out of Santiago together. Clearly I didn't think this through because as it turns out 1200 is a bigger number than 125.

Currently having trouble uploading photos via Flickr...

Did the drunken nights of karaoke keep you in Santiago? Or did you make it out of there?

Wherever you are, hope you're still enjoying yourself...

Back to the Past

I had some great times those first two weeks in Santiago, Chile. Most importantly I learned, holy shit I can do this! Successfully shipped a Harley from the US to Chile, got it out of customs, successfully traveled solo, spoke Spanish with locals, went on a date with a local chilena, managed to slip into the Santiago Harley store for service the day before they closed down and moved! Those guys saved my life by the way! And I made friends with Australians, Germans, Brits. I've traveled before but it was always with people I knew, and I learned how easy it is to make friends when you're traveling solo.

Here's a photo of Mat the brit and myself before we struck out from Santiago to the coast.

To the West

After 2 weeks on a bottom bunk in an 8 person room being eaten alive by skeeeters, I'd had enough of that shit. So when I parted ways with Mat, I shacked up alone for 2 days in a decent hotel in Reñaca, just north of Viña del Mar/Valparaiso. It had secure underground parking, a pool (which was useless, it wasn't warm enough and it pissed rain the whole time I was there), it had a flat screen and a little kitchenette. But what mattered most was this...I had my own bathroom! I never realized how much I valued my own space. I spent those couple days eating and drinking well, reorganizing all my gear, wandering listlessly along the beach, sleeping and watching TV. It was lovely. Feeling re-energized, I made the short trip to Valparaiso. I arrived at my reserved hotel only to find that it was closed for the season. Hm...so I moseyed down the street and found an inviting hostel. Here's a photo from the beach in Reñaca, if this photo shit works

maybe switching from Flickr to Photobucket soon?
