New fees at Argentina LAND crossings

All travelers from the USA, Canada, and Australia must pay a new fee online IN ADVANCE of crossing any land border into Argentina. New law took effect on 7 Jan 2013. They seem to mean it.

$160 for the United States (valid for 10 years)
$100 for Australians (valid for 1 year)
$75 for Canadians (valid for one entry)

My uncle and his family are in Argentina right now. They flew down from Panama. They paid no additional fees. Of course my aunt and my cousins wouldn't pay any. She's Argentinian, and the kids are dual citizens!

I hope this doesn't happen for every CA and SA country...one could end up paying some $1200 on top of what's already required just in entry fees traveling overland to TdF...not that I will get to anytime soon, but still.

Bribes have never been necessary entering Argentina. What's more, most of the world doesn't pay the fees no matter where, when or how they enter--it's a reciprocal fee, based on what Argentina nationals pay for USA, Canada or Australia visas.

No big deal, but we might as well get used to these sorts of visa fees. As a US citizen, I paid handsomely for four visas in Latin America, and Argentina is now the fifth--add Chile as the sixth if you fly in. I go to West Africa regularly, where there are quite a few countries charging equivalent amounts, and one which last I checked was charging substantially more. Lots more restrictions on where you can obtain visas, too. More corruption, more expensive in general. More objective danger (e.g., wars and civil insurrection). South America's not difficult and not expensive by comparison.

$160 for a 10 year visa is not so bad.

From what I gather from my friends in the reciprocity countries US citizens traveling in SA are getting the better deal.

For me, the only significant one was Bolivia. Where else did you pay a lot? Maybe countries I didn't go to.

What I paid 2010-2012:

$135US - Bolivia - 5 year visa
$187US - Brasil - 10 year visa
$175US - Paraguay - 10 year visa

I didn't do the Guianas I think there are some fees up there.
