That was a lot of fun in spite of the pesky wind. Thanks everyone for coming out and thank you Ed for leading us on a really good route!

Great to ride with VStrom aficionado geoff2k, ORexpat (who's slip-slidin' away out towards Washington state next month, where he says other BMW riders exist), VACommuter (of side-hack fame, his KLR morphed into a BMW), XC Rider (whose tricked-out KLR now sports a Tee mod ), and nobie381 of the VStrom persuasion.Clothing-and-equipment department: Temperatures were in the 30's; wind most brisk, even BEYOND brisk, as previously stated. My maiden voyage with electrically-heated gear (courtesy NoVa Rider's generosity and Gerbing's integrity). My assessment and recommendation: If one chooses to ride in the cold, do whatever it takes to obtain some heated riding gear! What a sensuous luxury, riding through the icy chill, all toasty-warm, without even giving a THOUGHT to the cold! My testimonial may be limited in effectiveness, but, I feel strongly: Try it, you'll like it!

I will be riding on the 1st. The only day of the year I ignore any and all weather conditions too include freezing rain. I MUST start the year on two wheels..

Heated Gear Scorecard
Second XD's comments on heated gear . . . . wee bit nippy this morning, 25 degrees. Heated Jacket, gloves, grips = happy camper!
FWIW, feedback on heated gear: I've used two brands of heated clothing and controllers, Aerostich and Gerbings. I give Gerbings two thumbs up, Aerostich heated gear two thumbs down. ![]() Don't get me wrong--I really like Aerostich riding suits, etc. Their made-in US Roadcrafter, Darien, etc are top-notch. I use that stuff 80% of the time (mesh the rest). Their repair service is also superb, catalog's a hoot, and selction is excellent. I'm a loyal and good customer of theirs and will remain so. But their heated gear and their controllers suck. I let one jacket go with a bike I sold with fair warning and no charge. I've had three Aerostich controllers and had problems with all three--two complete failures. I've even had their connecting cords fail! Gerbings has been 100% reliable, and now that their production is coming back to the US, all the more reason to use 'em. I haven't had to use their customer service; others have and say it's great. Haven't used any other brands, so can't report on them . . . |

I too concur on the heated gear. I have a Gerbing jacket, gloves and controller that are almost ten years old. Best motorcycling gear investment I've ever made. Just tried some warm n safe socks last night. Now my toes are warm too. No experience with Aerostitch, but my Gerbing stuff has been wonderful!
