Are you sure you are unloading the drivetrain prior to your downshift?

I don't think you mentioned how many miles are on the bike?
On my 1150, down-shifting became quite difficult when my slave cylinder started to die. As mileage goes higher, slaves get older, then they die. But I'm not a 1200 guy so don't know if this applies to you. |

The bike is a 2004, with about 18500 miles. The bike has a full BMW Service History up until 2010, missed a service in 2011 because of lack of use and an independant garage in 2012. |

That thing is still new ! Take the link with the ball joints off, wash out with WD-40, lube up with grease and you'll notice the difference.

I think that you tube video only apply's to the dohc model, may be wrong though???. Gear box oil changed today and it was quite rank looking compared to the stuff we put in. Linkage taken off, cleaned and greased etc. May be psychological but after taking it a short run it did appear much smoother changing gear. On closer inspection there was a wee bit of play in the linkage. I will have to update when this Scottish weather is a bit more tolerable to see if the problem is completely solved, however, fingers crossed!!!!

I see what appears to be a felt washer in some pics. Should that be present on all models? I have a '95 GS.
Thanks for the pics. |

Yes - but if yours is missing - don't get the BMW one. Touratech have got an upgraded one, made from a mix of carbon fibre and felt made out of llama's wool. It's expensive, but if you're going to fix this problem, you may as well do it once and do it right.
