Hi guys!

Thanks for reading and posting ... I love reading and seeing where all my Bay Area friends are riding, so it's fun to get to join in here on the BAARC with our rides! Cary is fun to ride with, too, I'm super lucky ...

Hope to see you all soon,

Hi HWD and WC,

I'm looking forward to hearing about the extraction, too! Hope the clutches will continue to serve ... otherwise you're still pretty close to San Diego ...

Good luck, wishing you and your son well!

Down but not out - Bicycle strike on the 990

Well Bay Area Friends -

Today an "iffy" looking man on a rusty old bike decided to shoot across an intersection ignoring his red light. The light was green for me and I was traveling about 36 MPH when he jaunted across. I hit the front brake, swerved to the right to avoid him but it was too late. He is going to be OK - He was in the wrong - He took a ride to the hospital in the ambulance. I hit him pretty much square then laid the bike down and slid about 20 feet on the pavement. I am OK. I only have bruised ribs and a sore shoulder thanks to all my gear. The 990 on the other hand isn't doing so well.

The impact of the collision did some pretty good damage to both fairings, headlight and then the subsequent skidding ground down the crash bars pretty well.

I am glad I am very sore but OK and I am thankful to the 3 witnesses that stopped to help out and support my claim of innocence. I feel sorry for the guy but he was riding on towards me on the wrong side of the street, and then took a right turn right in front of me ignoring the streetlight.

I heard the paramedics say he'll be OK - with cuts and contusions

This happened in Alameda, less than 3 miles from my home. Thanks to Bert and Wendy for shooting over to help out and to treating me to "chicken and waffles" after the whole thing was over. I was riding to meet up with him for lunch just 5 miles from my house!

I am really hoping they can repair the bike as I have done so much to it over the last few years. More to come....

Peace out and please ride safe!

Damn, Chris! I'm glad you're ok. Sorry about the bike...I know it's painful to see it in such a state...but, again, I'm glad you're ok. I'm also glad the guy on the bicycle is ok, too. Damn...

Well THAT is a frickin; bummer.

If you find the replacement parts are not covered by insurance, unavailable, or unmanageably costly, I'm happy to help weld reinforcements on the crash bars and do some fiberglass work on the fairings.

Wow - glad you are Ok

Holly crap Chris - glad you are OK and sorry I was not there to help out.

Was the guy on drugs?

Looks like most of the damage is bolt-off and on stuff.

I went through a similar repair on my 950 when I high sided a couple of years ago.

If you need any help let me know - I might even have a few spare parts.

Sorry to hear about the crash and the damage to the bike and gear. What's most important is that it sounds like everyone is ok.

I worry about that same thing happening here in Santa Cruz, where clueless/iffy folks frequently wander or dart into traffic with reckless abandon.

Did the bicycle guy have anything in the way of insurance?

I seriously doubt this guy has any insurance. Not to make judgement on looks, but he was on a POS rusted out bike coming up the wrong way on the street. He "appeared" to be using very poor judgement. I feel totally bad about the whole incident but not many people in their "right mind" would do what he did on such a busy 4 laned street. Not even ABS would have helped me here....

I appreciate all the comments and once I figure out what my insurance is going to do will look to take suggestions. This bike has everything on it FYI:

- Crash bars
- Heated Grips
- ADV Tank
- 2:1 pipe
- Remus Exhaust
- 18,800 miles

I would so hate to loose her...

I am not one bit sorry for that guy.

Similar thing happened to me in San Diego years ago.

While I was laying on the plate in the ER, with three broken ribs, a broken wrist, a concusion and a bruised lower vertebrae, along with a bike that I had a choice to write off or repair. I could hear the cop interviewing the women, who turned left across my lane from the road side shoulder without looking. Her answer, that was golden, "I counted the cars that I had seen coming up the road, I had counted their right side lights and after I saw four pass me I then turned". I guess I should travel on the shoulder so she can see my lights too. Forget about looking before you turn Huh, no need I thing or not !

So no I do not feel sorry for the guy, only for you being put in the situation that you could not avoid while paying attention and now suffering the consequences.

Was his name Darwin ?

Damn that within five miles of home stat!!

Glad you're both up and moving.

Bicycle did the same thing to my wife the other day, wrong way and didn't look, she stood the Volvo on it's nose to keep from hitting him and got the double finger for missing.

I'm glad you're OK. That everyone is OK actually.

rant But I have to say that with all that's been done to date regarding bike lanes, bridges, street reconfigurations and so on, nothing has yet been done about situations like this. Your insurance will pay-they may try and go after the bike rider but I doubt it. Maybe your rate will go up or maybe it won't. It kinda sucks because you know damn well that had it been your fault and you had no insurance... /rant.

I am glad I have 3 witnesses that told my story to the cops.

1. SWA flight attendant on his way to work
2. Very nice lady that stayed at the scene until the tow truck came
3. Very nice man that was in the lane back left of me

I have a feeling those images will stick in their minds for quite sometime. I consider myself an uber safe rider and just do it for fun. This does prove my thinking that I prefer to ride off road.. at least when I dump her, I don't have to blame another human.
