1986 Subaru GL AWD

Just bought one from another inmate, anybody have any tips, things to look for quirks etc.
The PO put a new gas tank, new belts and hoses on it.
It needs CVU shafts on the front, no big deal or cost.
110,000 miles on it, low considering the age.

The little thing runs like a pickle seeder.

It is a 4wd not awd to be technical since it runs around as a fwd until you engage the rear axle. It has the manual transfer case lever next to the e-brake lever, right?

Amazing. East of the Mississippi I would have figured those had all turned to Iron Oxide quite some time ago.

Adjustable rear suspension; IIRC the adjuster is under the back seat.

The HVAC fan will only work on 3 or 4....

Other than that, just get used to being passed like you are standing still and not having to worry about breaking down...

Loved my old GL wagons....

HA... I forgot they had a high and low 4wd drive system...

Subaru's answer to the Toyota Tercel SR5 4WD - with even less power!!!

I had an '84 turbo with a brush guard and a winch on the front. One day after filling up with fuel I had a bit of anti freeze leak onto one of the winch solenoids in the engine bay. Who knew that antifreeze is not only conductive but is also actually flammable? Of course I was parked next to a cage full of 20# propane tanks...

If memory serves, the '86 is one of the early OHC motors, the one with a cam belt for each side of the engine. The belt that drives the driver's side cam is longer and also powers the distributor, which ran off the back of the cam. This belt is the one that usually breaks first if you fail to change the belts every 60k. The good news is it is not an interference motor and the car just stops: replace the belts and you are on your way again.

The quick check is to pop off the cap and roll the motor over- you will know the problem when you observe the rotor not moving. Other than oil leaks and cracking y-pipes the belts were the only thing I recall that regularly failed on these engines. The front half shafts had crappy rubber boots and would eat themselves up in a trice if a boot split- I was in the habit of inspecting the boots on mine every time I had the hood open and at every oil change. Later re-mans and replacement axles came with better boots that lasted a lot longer.

Yeah I don't remember those cars being all that slow, and a lot of people drove those where I grew up in New England and they got up steep snowy hills just fine and cruised at speed on the highway. Wish I had bought one when I was 16 instead of a Jeep CJ and then a Rabbit GTI 6mos later (both fun in their own regard but utterly unreliable!)

Most I remember were 1.8L with Fuel Injection

We had an '81 hatchback. It was pretty gutless, but reliable. We had our first child and it was just too hard the put in a car seat in the rear. I laugh when I think of the butterscotch checked seats, 3rd eye and boob controls on the dash.My wife and I just talked about it saturday when we went to the car show to look at the new Impreza. This is all that we have left our HB after all these years.

The one i bought looks just like that, except with 3 of the 4 hub caps, even has the same rust spot on drivers side rear wheel well.
As always, the wealth of knowledge here is like no other place in the www.
