Some American Airlines pilot in Texas is/was building this thing to try and break Rare Bear's world speed record for a piston driven aircraft. Any idea if he ever flew it?

I went to the Reno Air Races several times in the late 90s. The sound of Rare Bear going by at 500+mph was a sound I'll never forget.

It's called an RP-4 and it's powered by two Dodge Dart V-8s. The prop tips will break Mach 1. Shades of Thunderscreech.

On that one, the valve covers look an awful lot like big block Chevys.

ANT-20bis variant, to be precise. The first ANT-20 had a different engine / propeller combo.
