The original notes page updated important news releases, stage results, penalty explanations, withdrawals, interviews, a link or two to videos and only a few photos if they went with one of the aforementioned items. The more to-business format allowed us to browse through the day's notes and get a feel for what was going on, quickly, instead of spending an hour or two reading the daily explosion of pages in the Official Event Coverage thread.

This year our cliff notes thread is nearly mirroring the Media Thread. Throwing all those photos (with no news/story behind them) into the cliff notes clutters up the thread. If you look at pages 23 back to 21 (for a short example), over half the content is linked directly from the media thread and some news is wedged in. A possible solution is to post when updates to the media thread have been made and provide a link to the updated Media Thread in lieu of 3/4 of a page worth of photos. In years past I believe it went something like this:
Stage X video uploaded to the media thread.
Stage X and Y Photos courtesy of WebVenture uploaded to media thread.
Interview after stage X, with Inmate Pyndon here.

I appreciate the work that goes into updating threads like the cliff notes and that it can be time consuming to find the most applicable content in the sea of the main and sub Dakar threads. I think the main idea that worked in past years was to keep the cliff notes as simple as possible and let the reader follow links or conduct a more refined search based off the concise information in the cliff notes.

Thanks,
E
Thanks for the notes, E. "Back in the day", the Cliff Notes thread had ALL of the media that we could put in big chunks there (pics, vids, RR calls, etc), as well as the "news", sans banter. As the amount of info here has exploded, some other threads have developed like the media thread, TV, thread, torrent thread, etc.

The Cliff Notes is designed as a one stop shop for what we would consider the "moderately interested" fan (ie wants more than NBCSports is going to give them but less than the firehose), or a diehard who is on a time budget on any given day. For those folks, having some pics and vids in the CN thread is very important.

For the inmate who's keeping up on all of the various threads, it's easy enough to skim over the CN posts you've already seen elsewhere. In fact, for that inmate, there's probably no reason to hit CN at all (until they find themselves in a time crunch).

The fact is that there is so much going on here, even with a few additional mods to share the load, it can be tough to keep the CN as timely as we were able to in the past. This is a big reason I refer people to the RallyRAIDio or RallyRaidReview twitter feeds for streamlined live results and updates while the stage is rolling.

I hope that explains a bit of the background, and why it is the way it is today.

Speaking of, remember when Troy used to be apart of the F5 team...seems like ages ago....i kinda miss his humorous daily recaps.

It's a long two weeks, for sure, Needed the rest day today!

It's hectic while it's going on, then a week or two after the fact, you miss it already.

Some amazing, truly priceless info on there (10% ICO deficit in soft sand, who would've ever guessed?)

If only we had the empire to do it fully, with live TV and bivouac reporters.

Just wondering ...

Don't think this is 205'd, but are there mattresses stacked under the service truck? Makes sense to me that the service crew would get a bakers dozen of mattresses, throw 'em in the back of the truck, take them out at service, and put the mattresses down on the ground to sleep on at night.

Only reason for me noticing is used to have curtains in a pattern very close to that.

Wow. Agree, that list was never questioned. Wonder what the story is? The quote posted earlier didn't really clarify anything to me.

Trucks will have pride of place when the rally resumes, only competing in one of the two parts of the special stage, but they will have the rare privilege of setting off first. The stage’s profile with quick tracks will be favourable to specialists of torturous routes. In the other categories, as the distance has been doubled it will also allow for an additional, much more technical section, where, in particular, the drivers will negotiate the bends in the forest. They will have to watch out for trees, given that the rapid assistance trucks won’t have access to the route. The competitors will have to be extremely vigilant over the entire distance, which is, for all except for the bikers, the rally’s longest special stage

A: that's going to tear the shit out of the piste!

B: Interested to see how Curt and some of the Aussie boys go.

Yes, but dont forget the trucks are only doing the 2nd SS tomorrow. With rain almost a guarantee (rainy season now) this stage is going to be very different to Peru.

I get home, have a brandy, and read this. And just to confirm the local time in Argentina is GMT -3, or 5 hours ahead of Pacific, 2 hours ahead of Eastern?

So Pyndon starts in about an hour and a 35 minutes from now?

Yes, sort of. Those time posted are for the start of the first liaison.

They haven't posted the official special start times yet, but show a range beginning at 0740hrs local time (GMT-3, as you noted).

I suppose it's possible that they'd leave on the liaison in that order, and find some sort of re-seeding has been ordered by the start of the special. Let's hope not, though! They've mucked it up enough in the past two days.
