Get well soon, Steve. House work sucks and more people get hurt doing that than riding bikes. Having said that, I am not riding because Mrs Kokopelli is nursing one or more cracked ribs from a couple of days ago. The big F650GS is not so good in sand with a short(ish) less experienced rider.

Thanks for all of your well wishes (again) guys.

I'll post up some pictures when I'm feeling more with it. No X'rays though. Hospital was bloody marvellous, but they need softer springs in the back of the ambulance, & I'm sure that they were have a bloody laugh when they filled me full of laxatives..

Broke my L1 vertebrae (bottom of the ribs). In a brace to stop me from moving (for the next 3 mths), & have another couple of big boxes of drugs to work through. They've sent me home with a double decker toilet seat, a litter grabber thingie & a chair for the shower (bloody daughters not getting hold of that - she spends too much time in there as is...)

Made sure I didn't book this one to the motorcycle ACC account. Talking of which have you all paid your house registration costs to date. I'm afraid that one is going to take a bit of a hit..

It will be at least 3 mths. First assessment in 2 weeks time. But back injuries are something to be cautious of. Assume that I won't be able to make it. I am thinking it'll take longer than 3 mths before I have any back strength again, & can ride for any length of time..I certainly won't be rushing back to work like I did with the ribs (as a for instance).

It's bloody frustrating, because I was going to attempt the ride with you & Mark - and now that's been taken away from me.

I'll need entertaining. Unfortunately they've taken away most of the drugs ending in -eine. There was some good ones there for a while, which allowed you to make your own fun (or at least not worry about things).

It's uncomfortable to sit in the computer chair - unlike when I did the ribs. So I suspect there'll be a bored Steve for a while.

Mandy has offered to host a beer & bullshit pizza night sometime in a few weeks though...

You didn't actually miss much - it was so hot on the side of the hill that Bart and (particularly) my energy just evaporated in the heat. I got about 1/4 of the way up and sat there digging trenches while Bart tried twice and very nearly did it but the heat of the direct sun made it such an unpleasant place to be. We tried another hill climb past the hut and got pretty much to the top but that was like a baking oven.

Bart had to head home about 3ish to meet family obligations so I farted around and road via Gladstone and Highway 52 up to Pahiatua and over the track and home - all seal but a lovely ride

I had just been fitted with the brace & was about to take my first steps.

I am fully institutionalised. I have no shame. I was entertaining vistors. I was wearing nothing underneath those gowns. Those are support stocking for my cankles. That is the catheter by my leg. Fortunately the clearer photos of me & the catheter are..currently unavailable.

Briefly here are the gory details:

• When they pulled the firehouse they laughingly called a catheter (Sunday), they caused some damage. So we were back at hospital A&E Monday trying to determine the extent of this, & whether my pissing blood was a result of my kidneys crumbling, or a UTI. Passing blood clots is not a lot of fun. Fortunately with the help of antibiotics this has come right. For a while we were joking there were three people suffering through their periods here;
• The catheter has improved flow significantly - reckon the pipework gauge has gone up several sizes. Couldn't recommend it for any of you old buggers with prostate issue though;
• The brace has caused pressure sores on my back. Mandy is trying to keep on top of those;
• 1st thing in the morning is a bit crappy. I take a leak, swallow drugs & go back to bed for a 1/2 hr to allow the drugs to kick in;
• When I overdo things the outside of my thighs goes numb & my knees tingle;
• My right side is definitely weaker than the left;
• I'm better walking or moving around then just standing;
• The lung damage from the rib injury is still causing issues. They had me on oxygen overnight while in hospital, because they couldn't get the 02 sats up - they hovered around circa 90 (should be 97-99%) - not dangerous, but knock your energy & concentration levels around...

REALLY notice when its time for the next drug dosage though. On Panadol, Ibuprofen, & Codeine currrently.

Despite all of the above I have actually recovered significantly from the fall. Yesterday walked a visitor to the garage, & today I managed a walk down the street to the post box - so getting better all the time.

Spending most of my time watching movies, blobbing, or on the computer. Surprisingly, I haven't been interested in Dakar this year.

Got a meeting with the Specialist Wed 16th. Still haven't got my discharge papers from the hospital, which is annoying,

That was an unfortunate transformation from Advrider to Advreader.

I am glad things are looking up a bit. I know there are no nipples in the photo, but surely they amount of leg shown is excessive. Less is more here.

Seeing how quickly things can go pear-shaped and how old bones take their time to heal, I will take it very easy on the Dusty.

That can happen. When I was a prison officer in Darwin NT many years ago I had to escort a young crim to hospital because he couldn't wee for a routine drug test.

Seems that a few years earlier, he had had a catheter inserted, and apparently they inflate them a bit when inside the bladder. On its removal, a young nurse who didn't know what she was doing just pulled it out instead of deflating it first, resulting in scar tissue on the inside of his willy.

Every now and again the scar tissue would close up and he couldn't wee for love or money, so a rod had to be inserted down his willy to open up things up.

I had to watch the whole procedure and could not believe that one person could wee so much at one time.
