Two Muppets take on the red bit in the middle...
In the first two weeks of july, Hillbilly and I will be heading out for a little ride.
There isn’t much of a plan at the moment other than Birdsville across the Simpson, somewhere around Finke, buy Boo a new pink roadhouse singlet, see Fenn at Cameron’s and buy beer at Noccundra. Now, I have not crossed the Simpson before and reading up on it there is a number ways to go. I’m not a great sand rider (actually I’m pretty crap) but I get there, and we are looking for an enjoyable trip rather than an extreme endurance test. Both of us have spent time in the outback before, we both have survival training, and neither of us are complete idiots (I'm missing some bits) so we will be taking all the usual precautions. Most of the reason I’m posting this is to get some opinions as to a good route across, and some possible ideas on the trip in general. Some good landmarks or points of interest. People we should say hi to or places to avoid. As I said, not an extreme filmed for television life or death trip. Just two guys unsupported having a bit of a look. Suggestions?

For the Simpson;
You'll need a South Australian Desert Parks Pass. It comes with maps. And once you have that you can use it in Innaminca and the Flinders Ranges to camp for 'free'. You need it because there will probably be a ranger checking on you having it somewhere on your trip, so get it. The money goes to the maps, and cost of facilities in the park. You can chose either the 'rig road' or the 'french line'. Both have things to see. About the same fuel consumption as the french line has more sand but is shorter compared to the rig road. You should do some reading ... books on the Simpson include one by Griselda Sprigg "Dune is a four letter word". Web links - http://www.exploroz.com/Forum/Topic/...t_history.aspx and there trecks tag for info.. What you get out there will depend on what the weather is like - both before and during your trip. Enjoy. |

Sorry Phil, I don't drink beer.
I guess we'll just have to get hillbilly to drink twice instead.
