Thumb Way in on this one.

Great RR. Retired from the military a few years ago and understand what you were saying. I'm off on another trip right now still doing a little work for the effort in SWA. I can understand the head clearing going on. You picked a great way to do it. You did a heck of an ambitious ride there and I'm glad you took all of us inmates along. I won't be back for any serious trips for awhile yet but I would be in if you ever do another, particularly to the north east.
Ride safe man.

@ mrphotoman...

Sorry to hear about the vacation... one thing I find extremely valuable is time off. Just found this morning one of our coworkers, and good friend, has passed away. He was diagnosed with cancer in Oct and in great health up to that point. It has happened so quick. I'm at a loss for words.

Regardless of you job / career, take the time you need. Enjoy the things you love. I found out about our friends cancer while on this trip. Taking the time, regardless of the difficulty in doing so, is worth it in the end.

@blacktruck,

I'm about to make that move from retirement to the airlines as well. I've just about 26 years in and it doesn't look good with cut backs that I can hang on much longer. Spent the last two weeks on airlineapps getting everything together. Looks like Delta and United will be opening their doors soon. Wish me luck in getting hired.

As for a trip north... I'd like to make that one very soon. Just waiting on the weather to break. I don't mind the cold, just don't want the snow.

Those "Oh Shit" times like when you were coming over the pass in the snow, and similar incidents has happened to me also.

More times than once. That feeling you have when you know that you could of avoided it, but taken the chance anyway and pressed forward are awful. I keep thinking of my family and get mad at myself for jeopardizing their well being. It's like we lose sense of caution because we don't want to succumb to being afraid.

I always feel rewarded when I come out of these incidents, and thankful that I survived them. But also feel uncomfortable that I risked what could of been a very unfortunate outcome.

Is it because there is something inside us that needs to feel that fear every now and then?

Excellent Ride Report

Wow, what a great way to clear your head after serving to protect our freedom. I appreciate your sacrifice, and will remember this when I head out of DC into the foothills of PA/WV on my orange F800GS!

Cheers,

I don't have any plans in the works. I just know I want to do it soon. Not like tomorrow soon, but like when the weather breaks soon. It doesn't have to be warm, I just want to ensure it will be clear of snow.

More than likely I will only have a three day weekend to work with, but could be ready to leave right from work and maybe skate out a little early. The trip really wouldn't take that long to do as the Maine border isn't too far away.

If you're interested let me know. We'll start to plan it out!

Poolman, let me know when you come up this way. Love to go on a little ride with you. Always have a cold beer or two lying around for inmates!

WOW!
Glad I came across this RR from a fellow Pittsburgher and F800GS rider.
Thanks for sharing your experiences and hope to join you on one of your rides.
