I was 10th to start today and what's more, I broke my wheel trim on the link stage. I thought, ‘well this is a really good start to the day'! I rode carefully at the start because there were a lot of stones and rocks, then I attack in the dunes. I finished 2nd on the stage, so it actually has turned out to be a good day. I'm very happy with the work Cyril did and I'm happy with my personal result.
However, there are still two days left to race and on the Dakar, you can be smiling one day and then unfortunate the next day. It's happened to Casteu and to Pain, so I'm saving my smile for when we reach the end of the rally. For the moment, it's going fine.

Today was quite a hard special. We had a lot of dunes. We also had a lot of stones and rios – it was very technical. There was also a lot of work on navigation, you had to be very precise on navigating not to get lost. I did quite well all day. I kept on pushing from the start to the finish and I caught about three guys: Faria, Jakes and Duclos. We were riding really hard and really good. I'm very happy to have won this stage and also thanks to Yamaha who gave me this wonderful bike, I couldn't do without it.

2008 - Lined up for the aborted Lisbon-Dakar on XR250's - one badged "NEW MOTOR" and the other something else ( can't recall ), the bikes were as rough as guts, very poorly prepared.

2013 - One Chinese & one westerner on KTM450 Rallye's apparently ( I'm stuck in Oz ).

So why do they do it ? As with anything in China, you can never get a straight answer. I have met with Jincheng several times for an unrelated project and they are very proud of their Dakar team - when i asked them why they use Yamahas instead of developing something themselves, you just get a blank stare - like "Who told him we use Yamaha's...". So who knows, maybe they will come up with something of their own, maybe it will look not a lot unlike a certain Austrian Rallye bike ??

You can see the progression though, with typical Chinese logic - enter some XR250's, good reliable bikes - didn't finish.
Enter some Yamaha's, good reliable & fast bikes - finsihed at back end of field. Enter a KTM 530 with a western rider -
finsihed mid field. Enter the bike the won the Dakar the previous year.......

next time you're talking to them, show them the 2x2x2. put a big tank on that and point them in the direction of some big dunes.

Potentially fixable. If he's out of water, the Dakar sweep truck will provide that...

Anyone ripping on the Dakar officials for not helping out sure looks nuts after seeing this gentleman dabbling in helping all comers.

Hats off to people that take pride in their work... whatever it may be. They make the world a better place. We obviously need a lot more of them with the current world situation ;-)

Ahh! No wonder. He's the big boss... and I can see why. Bon travail!
