Strangely, that made me have a craving for herring and strong beer.

You're right, that is strange.

I do basically what zmotoman does, but in Socal. 120 miles from Tijuana.

Buy bikes for travellers. Rent rooms to travellers. Get paperwork (titles). Home address useage.

Bike prep/guide/help.

It's a paying hobby. Reasonable prices. Working from home.

There is no shortcut to a title, they are issued from Sacramento through your local office, quickest I've had one is 10 days. Average is 15 days. You get your registration handed to you, you can ride the bike and get the title later. You can ride Baja to Cabo San Lucas on just a reg with no title. You can ride anywhere in the US with just the reg.

Your best states to buy will be either South AZ or South CA. Mild weather. Nice bikes.

Dubbelju Motorcycle Rentals in San Francisco occasionally sells used bikes from their fleet (which includes many GSs - though they tend to be out of your price range). They also do storage and can most likely help with title/registration issues too -- I know that there are several foreigners who store their bikes there and have Dubbelju handle paperwork/shipping/maintenance on their behalf.

Call or email and ask for Wolfgang. If nothing else he's sure to provide plenty of useful info.
