![]() ![]() ![]() I drove through a good amount of snow last night to take my wife back and forth to Knoxville. I left the 4x4 truck at home and drove my Buick Roadmaster. I amused myself by passing stuck 4x4s with my rear wheel drive car. Laughed at the BMW M5 whose 400 hp only made it tougher for his traction control to keep up. I only got worried once when I got stopped on an uphill grade and the car spun the tires over a time or two just releasing the brake. Then it hooked up. mmmMMmmm Michelin truck tires.

Was there a polar shift or something that the media outlets didn't pick up? West Jefferson used to be northeast of Boone.

Went to meet friends last night in Durham for supper. Left at 7 with it still 43 degrees and drizzle and took the car that was easiest to get out of the drive. I saw some flakes falling out the window about 8:30 Left supper at 9 with snow and road surfaces slushy. I was startled. I-85 home was 40 mph mostly because of all the blend of cars and trucks with slush ridges between the tire lanes that made it dicy to change lanes. Once back home in Hillsborough the roads were white. I was surprised. I was a little concerned as the wife's v70 has tires that are pretty worn and are due to be replaced soon. Two obstacles were a 1/3 mile straight reasonably steep uphill grade and the 75 degree uphill turn back onto our road. Approaching the first grade I see a car 1/4 mile ahead moving very slowly in that direction. Not good. I do like to have a bit of momentum at the bottom, 20 mph isn't that. I pull off in a safe place and wait several minutes. Then head in that direction again. The view of the straight up the hill is blocked by overhead bridges until you are at the base. I am accelerating as we go under the bridges and.... and look... the car I was worried about is stopped at an angle halfway up with another car behind it and traffic coming the opposite way. I have another car coming up behind me and we both get up to that point and finally have to stop. Everyone stops.. Waiting, for what?????? No one is moving so I take the lead and pull out in the left lane since traffic was stopped above this sideways Crown Vic. Movement is just possible but about the time I draw up next to it I lose complete movement other than the front wanting to slide off to the left. The SUV following me was taking my lead and was now behind me. So I work to gain a few inches at at time. I could back a few inches straighten the front and them move a foot forward and loose motion. Still that is forward. So I repeated this until around the two stalled cars, foot or half a foot at a time. Then once around them I could better pick a line and could just maintain about 5 mph the rest of the way up.
Went to turn onto our road. I swung really wide so I might cut off as much of a sharp bend as possible and keep as much momentum as I could. Strange in that no brake, no throttle moment and the car refused to respond. Turned the wheel and nothing happened. So slowed and still made the turn but lost all sense of momentum. This is a short uphill of about 200 feet and not that much of grade. We got 100 feet and that was it. The strategy that was successful down the road didn't work here. So we got out and cleared a path with our boots, let wife drive and son and I offered a moderate effort push. That got her going and she stopped 100 ft later at the crest. I hopped back in and we made it up the other hill easy peazy. So I kicked myself for not being more prepared. Nothing in the car for extra traction. (dog food works well which was on the porch and I have some bags of gravel sitting next to the bike parking pad I just built) I didn't take the XC90 AWD with new tires cause it was blocked in AND... it is 43 degrees and raining and we are only going to be gone 2 hrs. In the last 30 yrs, I have been stuck 3 times (not counting the one where I managed around the 2 stalled cars). This is where I had to get out and do something. All three times were at the same spot. I learned again, prepare to expect the worse and not worry about regretting that decision. We ended up with only about 4 inches but if fell in a hurry. Hope all of yall found some good times in this. Temps are to be 58 here Sunday! NCS
