Seat tool / first-aid box removal

I hope someone here has tackled this before. My 78 S has the dreaded "ball buster" seat. The little compartment right under where the boys rest. My understanding this was only on 78-79 and contained a first-aid kit. I have new foam and cover on the way from Sargent. I will cut the box out of the pan to match the contour of the new foam and somehow permanently attach the door to the end to add support.
Advice? Of course the pan will be cleaned and painted purty.
Cheers
Steve
