Just looked beyond the bikes to the other categories and it's looking like there has been some serious attrition in the fields today.

Hopefully it's just wacky trackers, but notables include a Bowler from GBR that went missing after WP12 -- that isn't "Joy" the last Race2Recovery car is it? So close to the end of the stage! Also the Canadian truck of Turcotte is still out there somewhere.

Thankfully the R2R Joy made it today and with luck will make it to Santiago tomorrow. From their FB:

"At last Team Joy have completed Stage 13 of Dakar 2013; feeling emotional now! So nearly there!"

Gian's got it. M(arathon) is counterpart to SP (Super Production), which refer to bike mods.

ASO have never been good about differentiating the other sub-categories in the standings. Thank heavens for Mischa!

Car space (use the ASO transport is convenient but gets you no stage access for photos etc), so get your own media-car hired and accredited = $2000 (at a bare minimum).
About $70 a day for fuel. 70*15 = $1050.
Accommodation for non-bivouac days (start and finish) $300.

All up, you're looking at $15,000 to get something going. Oh, and if you want to get global digital rights to the feed provided by the ASO add another $250,000.

So basically, even for something like web coverage with results, photos, video interviews and reports, you'd need two people with video accreditation, you'd be at $30,000 before you even began.

If that $30,000 should ever appear I'd like to apply for one of the positions, and I'd write a book to be printed and sold after the event. (I've written one and co-written three already but not about the Dakar).
Of course, there are plenty of people on F5 who would also love the gig and deserve it for what they put into this site already, so if you guys do get the $$ up, I think it would be great coverage. God knows I'd tune in, I'd even pay a subscription fee for it.

Keep an eye out after the event. We can kick some ideas around.

Best thing I ever did was cover that race on the ground. Not being there brings me to tears nowadays though, so be warned!

Actually sounds like she's french but learned her english in UK and it makes for a twisted accent...

Fully programmed fitness training regimes - it might only ultimately prove a couple of minutes, but it's now coming to that!

CDP and a few others have cycling related activities as serious hobbies and would be competing on bikes or in triathlons if they weren't fortunate enough to be where they are

This is pretty much standard practice in SX/MX and a good majority of the GNCC/enduro types are either using some sort of cycling to warm-up/cool-down or at least train. The idea is to keep the body from collapsing, going from on/off like that does some hard stuff to the body.
