yes there is the Susuki dr 200 , old honda XL 125 to 200 ? Kawasaki KLR 250. Same old same old we ll never see them . HOnda sell 750000 bikes that country every year. You could see what the regs are on importing a Mexican honda motorcycle and get one of the Honda cargo 150cc for around 1800 bucks. see below for different bike makers in Mexico but I left out Kawasaki because nothing they offer isn't already for sale in the usa that they have in Mexico. One old guy took an Hdona Gl125 the model before the 150cc and went to 14 thousand miles tour with it . 55MPh and and 80MPG made it a great little touring bike for south America

I think you are describing Simon Gandolfi. He wrote a couple of books about his adventures and they are great. This one is my favorite:

not close at all i had a ksr, its bigger than the skyteam and much better quality!
