Doesn't have to be Craigslist. Last year I deposited a conversion van here on Flea Market, bought tickets to Buffalo for me and my brother to pick it up and the two days before I was supposed take the Greyhound bus the owner returns my deposit. No answers to my calls the first day and finaly he calls and says he is sorry but the brakes on the van are so bad he can't get them fixed and he backs up from sale. I said I have the bus tickets and I'm coming and buy from him with bad brakes and then he comes up with a story that it would be so unsafe for me he can't let that happen

I called about this bike as well, when I found it on craigslist. Guy sounded nice over the phone, explained he had no title at the moment. He said he had a lot of interest in the bike, but not having the title was turning people off. Said he needed the money because he hurt his back (blah, blah, blah) and was even offered $200 more than his asking price. Good thing I didn't drive out to see it...

I can understand the seller if someone came by and waved $$$ in his face, let's say $300-$400 more than he was asking, to someone who is already that desperate to sell the bike well below market price that extra few hundred is a lot of reasons to back out of the deal and come up with some lame story. In theory once the deposit is placed you have a contract, I think RI state law says that VERBAL contracts up to $2500 are valid, which means a handshake deal on a $2000 bike is a contract that can be enforced by court, and if it's under $5K you can take it to small claims and end up on TV.

I had someone send him an email a few days into it, ('cause the ad was still up)and didn't get any response, so I thought things were OK.
Randy --the ad still shows up if you click on the link, but,it's gone from craigslist
I'm just gonna chalk it up to experience, and not let this guy rent space in my head
Haven't got the check back yet though

I wonder if he put the price low to generate interest, & phone calls

I also can sort of understand that it's hard to ignore a higher offer, but he could have at least given me a phone call-we did have a written deal.
I guess common courtesy isn't all that common.

I just saw this. I'm not sure if it's a great deal or not but I figured I'd pass it along. This is at a dealer in CT.
