DV NooB

4 or 5 of us from WY and UT are headed to DV February 1st and ride through the 4th, we plan to use Vegas as our base camp . What rides do you recommend? We're on 800 GS' and are intermediate to advanced riders. The temps look like 50-60's during the day.

All advice and rides are greatly appreciated

you plan on riding from Vegas to DV and use Vegas as base camp? ride from VEgas to DV every day?
Coming from that side do titus canyon first.
Then crankshaft/teakettle/racetrack/lipendcott/saline valley road

Amen! I second that. Titus was amazing my first trip.... And probably going to be amazing still on my last trip

Saline gives you a BUNCH of sights so from their, find a new trail a rock it out!

Have a fun which ever direction you choose to go,

Thanks for the trail advice. It looks like one day will be dirt riding to Laughlin, one day DV and a shorter ride (yet to be determined, closer to Vegas). The Gazzetteer shows a handful of dirt routes to Laughlin, any recommendations

Rode Steel / North pass yesterday

Saturday 1/26/13 I rode from Bishop out to Eureka sand dunes via Death valley road on a KLR 650. No snow and the roads were smooth. The road behind the dunes was sandy but managable. Dedeckera canyon was in good shape and no big deal. Steel pass has had some 4x4's through it and it was easy to follow and pretty good shape. I took North pass back to Bishop. It is in great condition and I made good time getting home. There were a couple of small icy snow sections that were easy to avoid. It may be raining or snowing out there today but it was all good yesterday.

Saturday 2/2/13. I rode solo on my KLR 650 From Panamint over Goller wash, Mengal, Butte valley and Warm springs. I took West Side road to over to Furnace Creek and the highway back to Panamint. It was my first time riding that road so I have nothing to compare it to, But it all seemed in pretty good shape. The short downhill with the rocks in Mengal was easy but I dont know if I could have gone back up it by my self or not. The whole trip is a bit rocky but fun.

Thanks Verge:

That was exactly the information I was looking for on Steele Pass. From your report, there was no or little snow and ice on North Pass. Did you happen to get any pictures?

Thanks for the update on Mengel and Goler Wash as well.

As of today no ice on south pass, or over hunter mountain, and Cerro gordo is passable with minimal ice thats easily avoidable. Perfect weather around DV now. (:
