I think you would be happy with either bike, as there will be route options to suit a variety of riders/bikes.

Granted, the KLR would probably be more suitable for the vast majority of the riding in this area - lots of well maintained gravel surfaced county and USFS roads. And certainly it will be fine for the lighter mix of road and trail that many will choose to ride. The KLR will certainly handle anything we can throw at it terrain wise, but it might (it will) wear you out if you opt for the more trail oriented routes. If you do bring the KLR, it will be far from the only one at the Shindig.

There isn't any dedicated single track here (though scouting efforts continue ), and the trail terrain is generally fairly tame; I would rank the most difficult terrain here as moderate on a scale of easy/moderate/difficult/extreme. It gets harder as you ride faster. However within the limitations of the terrain, we'll be making our best attempt at putting together some relatively challenging, trail oriented routes, in which case your DRZ would be a much better choice.

To last year's trail riders who already have a feel for the terrain and want to do it again: we'll (if I have my way) try to string together more of the "good stuff" for a similar experience to last year, just with more miles on the trail and minimum miles on the road (even though that still means lots of road miles). Bring big gas tanks and lots of energy! (And don't forget tools and spare parts!)

For me, the appeal of the Shindig rides is that you are going someplace and are out in the forest, as opposed to riding in circles on a trail system.
I rode up the last two years, but this year I will probably trailer and be up on the Northshore for the whole week.
If you ride up a 50/50 tire would be good enough traction for the riding.
and what Lutz said.

Well, I just projected my work schedule out for the rest of the year. As an RN, weekends are part of the deal. And the Shindig occurs on a....wait for it..... work weekend !! Still a good chance that Thurs and Fri are off. I'll do my best. I'd really like to make this for both the riding and meeting a bunch of the inmates.

5 months to find a fellow RN to switch places with. No problem! You really DON'T want to miss the shindig!

I still have a pretty good dent on the rear rim, but the side case has been replaced.
That picture does show a good example of the minimum tire tread needed for this event. Although if I had more knobby tires I probably wouldn't have slipped on some mud and broken the side case. But if I hadn't gotten the front flat tire I would have never notice the oil leaking out the side, and if Lutz wasn't so great at patching tires I would have been eaten by many more mosquitoes. I'm hoping to pay it forward this year.

That IS true. Not too often I tweak my schedule, but I think this needs to be one of those times. This will be a great way to get a new moto-perspective on my old stomping grounds !! Thanks for the push !

Black KLR, but it's the day-glo yellow 'Stitch and yellow helmet that people notice. The banana is back for 2013!
