Have your bike ready when you get into Mexico. If you don't speak spanish, you don't want to go tire shopping in a foreign language. Also, the rule for Mexico is Food, Hotels & Booze are cheap, bikes and parts aren't. If you do have to fix a bike, the cheaper labor will offset parts cost, but it may be a wash with what you pay here. Tire selection isn't great in Mexico, either. And you may find you have a uncommon / 'big' bike compared to 90% of the Mexican market.

Why waste a day fixing a bike, or worrying, if you don't have to.

Thanks for the replies. I admit it is a rather hasty idea, and I agree that it's not the kind of trip to rush into. I kind of need to get out of my current housing situation (staying with brother and SIL, but it's been too long) and I was trying to think of somewhere cheaper to go and ride and kill some time. Just brainstorming the idea and pondering an adventure, but I agree there's a lot that needs to be taken into consideration.

Thanks, but I'm afraid that's a bit too soon for me, as I'd have some prep work to do and I'm still on the east coast of the US and he's already in central Mexico.

I appreciate the connection, though.

BENTHERE, depending on a lot of things, I may be interested in going with you if you want the company. time frame? total days? i've considered camping as i do prefer that, but everything i've read says hostels are too cheap to consider lugging the camping gear along.

Thanks for the message, kitesurfer.

I've got so much in the air at the moment - another option I'm exploring is going over to the Czech Republic (not exactly riding weather over there, so no motorcycling). The plus side is that I'm in Myrtle Beach at the moment (where my bike is stored) so I can go out for a ride (high in the low 70's) and clear my head somewhat.

I'm headed down to Mexico on Feb 20th, crossing at Tecate. Riding down to see the gray whales and do the coast around Bahia de Concepcion, one of the most beautiful areas on the Baja. We will be down about a week. Staying at a couple Bed and Breakfasts along the way.

Anybody interested in tagging along?
