Morrocan Adventure

Hey guys!!!

It's that time of the year when I start planning my trip!!! This year I'll be going to Morroco. I'll go on the end of July with my father and whoever wants to share an adventure (you included!!!) and I'm planning a 10 day's trip.

I'll start reading all about Morroco here on ADV and seeing those Ride Reports but I'd like to ask you for any tips and first-hand guidance!

As I said earlier, I'll be going in the end of july, beggining of august so, if anyone wants to join us, just talk up ;D

HiDust! My husband and I is also planning a trip to Morocco, but at the end of May - beginning of June. You want to go in late July - early August is the hottest period in Morocco, in the afternoon to + 40 degrees! I would advise you to go early.
Route. My advice is to go down below Marrakesh, where the most interesting: the mountain passes, sand dunes, canyon, etc.
We can advise you what we looked for us:
From Marakesha come down the N9 (a beautiful mountain road) to the Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou. Then drive through the town Uarzazad, then on the road N 10 to the turn on the road Gordes du Dades (famous twisted road). Drive on this road and go back to N 10, drive a bit and turn on the road Gordes du Todra (canyon), drive there and back again on the N10.
On the road N10 to get to N13 to Mezguida, there are sand dunes, and you can stay there for the night. Return back through Errachidia.

Agreed...expect it to be really hot...if you don't mind the heat you'll be OK. If it were I Id' ride with a 'camel back'on so as to hydrate whilst riding. Buy a Decathlon one for about €25.

Looking at your route I'd head for Ouarzazate to see a change of landscape and scenery...then head on over to Merzouga on tarmac for the same reasons....then head home north via Midelt and Ifrane etc

It'd be a shame to head all the way to Maroc and not get to see the dramatic contrast in landscape for the sake of scooting over the mountains south of Marrakech IMO.

July will be incredibly hot, undoubtedly above 35ºC, possibly anything up to 45ºC. I had to severely curtail our route last June and two Portuguese riders died through heat exhaustion.

You should plan to get off the main roads more, get a map such as Michelin 742 that shows scenic routes, plan to keep more to the mountains for the cooler air.

The coast will be cooler than inland but the area of the coast from Casa to Khenitra is uninteresting (major connurbations).

I have done several 300km+ and even 500km+ on 40ºc, it's usual for temperatures to get that hot in mainland Portugal so I don't worry too much about temperatures. Even so, I'll sure get hidrated and travel on the mornings, getting up early ;)

I'll be travelling with my father on a Yamaha T-Max 500cc scooter, so we'll stick to asphalt only, maybe little dirt tracks if available but nothing too off-roady serious

We'll set off from Lisbon on the 27th of July and finish on the 8th of August. These dates are still subject to some shifts, obviously

Wish I could go with you guys!, I really hanker for a Morocco trip. I also went there end of July, very hot in the south but bearable, my 2ct piece of advice: drink a lot and rest in the central hours of the day. I wrote a short report of my trip (signature link), hope it helps. Boa Viagem!!

Yes, We'll get up early (5/6am) travel by the early hours and stop well before noon, so as to not get too exhausted either by long rides or hot temperatures! =)

I'll sure read your report and it will definitly help! =)
