VT street registration
Figure I'd shorten this:
Is there a 100% chance of being able to successfully street register a motorcycle with "off road only" in the title at VT DMV, given proper setup has been performed to adhere to state laws? Thinking WR450 or KTM300EXC with Highway dirtbike kit. moodfart screwed with this post 01-24-2013 at 09:32 AM |

It needs proof it's street legal, as in inspection. If your in Vermont it's a breeze just go to the DMV they tell you it needs to be inspected as it wasn't street legal from the factory, you get it inspected, bring form to DMV and get plate. At least that was my experience. Easier if your in or near Vermont.

Yes, I have immediate family in Vermont and plan to move there within the next 6 months.
Inspected at the DMV or a third party certified inspection shop? moodfart screwed with this post 01-24-2013 at 12:54 PM |

Yes you can do it. I know someone who just done it throu the mail. Just fill out the paper work that you can get online and send it in the mail with a bill of sale and a check for the money needed to register it,,,And probally 1-2 weeks later plates come in the mail. And he doesn't live in VT

Haven't done it with a bigger bike but Vermont does not title motorcycles under 300cc's regardless of age.
I have an '05 "off-road" 250 that is registered here & since I didn't need a title, I used the standard bill-of-sale, (ie:no paperwork stating "off-road") The inspection is done at a private shop after you get your plate & all the required equipment is installed on your bike; mirror, horn, hi/lo, brakelight, platelight, insurance card. My inspection guy wanted a speedo too but I'm not sure it is actually required but I wanted one anyway. |

Great news. Looks like its a sure fire bet... Like I said I just wanted to avoid any hang ups. Any of you guys on two strokes? Do they get hassled by the fuzz as much as they do in other places?

"Motor approved with an EPA highway use certification"
My understanding is that this requirement has been added to the inspection checklist within the last 6 months. What that means in practical terms, I do not know.

I got my 390 registered in VT in November. MSO said "Off Road Only"
-bike needed required equipment; headlight, taillight, horn, DOT tires, brake light -the inspector filled in and signed the paperwork for "Branded Title" -took the bike and paperwork to the local DMV office -they did the VIN verification right there -after paying them the required tax and fees they gave me a plate and temporary registration - then back to the inspection station to get the sticker - 2 weeks later they mailed me the permanent registration One thing that perplexed me is that they gave me my MSO back and said I wasnt getting a title, only a transferable registration. They stated it was because the bike was under 500cc but ive always known that to be under 300cc.

300 would probably be correct. They issued me a title for my XR400

I wasn't too concerned. I can sell the bike with either paperwork when the time comes. Just thought a title would make transfer to another state easier but not guaranteed. A friend that has his WR450 titled in VT tried to get it transferred to NY and they wouldn't do it.

The WR I had was tagged in VT but I tried to register it in NY. After arguing with the guy at dmv he gave me a plate, a few weeks later I got a letter in the mail saying I had to turn my plates in. I also have a bike tagged in VT, if NY doesn't my money to put bikes on the road I will give it to VT.
