Thanks for leading the way, taking the switch apart, and sharing the information with us. It's nice to know one can disassemble that switch without destroying it! That switch causes a lot of electrical problems, and I just might clean my switch this winter, before the riding season begins.

Yeah, you'd think switches are pretty easy but hopefully it will help others in the same position I was in. That's the hardest part of working on anything now days...trying to figure out how a part is held together as there are so many different ways.
Now that I know the correct way to take it apart it seems easy. Just make sure you spread the housing apart with a small screwdriver on the slot side and use a bigger screwdriver on the wires side to spread the housing while prying up out of the four tabs.

The reason I broke the other tab is I was trying to pry the piece open from the wrong end. I was assuming the rocker was held on by a small tab and didn't bother to examine the switch better. Stupid me!

I understand it was/is frustrating. I forget exactly but when a year or two ago you started having problems I offered to troubleshoot it for you if you wanted to bring it up here, but you were good. Remember that? I am glad you lived, but unclear on what you learned. . Are you saying it's starting and running well now, and that it was the switch the whole time, that you thought it tested good but must have had some error in your testing procedure?

Otherwise, it's easy to troubleshoot and easy to bypass.

That's pretty sweet. I'm not a real big fan of the cafe's although I like a nicely done up one. I don't think I could ride one very far :) I had an old Honda CJ360 for awhile. Wish I still had it for just playing with.

Thought it was time to drop in and say hello and introduce myself, (hope I am doing this in the right place).

I am the proud owner of a (new to me) 2008 XR650L which I purchased 4 days before Christmas (Merry Christmas to me!!!) and was fortunate enough to get it out for a run on Christmas day which is Awesome considering I live in Cambridge, Ontario. I've done a lot of reading on this site since then and I'm pumped to have found such a community of generous, free thinking, knowledge sharing riders as you lot. Regardless of when spring actually happens, this is destined to be the longest winter of my life.. I've toyed with the idea of buying a thumper for a few years now but for whatever reason waited till I hit my mid 40's to actually take the dive. I'm sure I will regret not doing it sooner but... C'est la vie.

There are a few questions I need to ask of any local riders, hopefully someone can help me out here. I am going to be getting licensed as a new rider (M1) because I let my license lapse for too long so I am hoping for some idea's on where to get the best deal on insurance. My previous ride was a Suzuki VZ800 and I was paying $1500.00/yr (the reason I quit riding) and if I can't find a better deal now I may have to consider selling again. I have done a rider training course and will only be looking to get liability coverage so if anyone has a contact or connection that might help get me a better rate I will be eternally grateful. I was also wondering if there are any riders in my neck of the woods who can give some input on places near to home to get off the beaten path, dirt roads, wide trails and scenic routes or group rides around these parts. I am going to throw out a "Thanks in advance" and look forward to hearing from any of you.

Welcome fellow Canadian........insurance was expensive as hell the first year i got back into riding,,State Farm is your cheapest place till you have 3 years riding experience.........then i went to Wawanesa Insurance and now pay 200 bucks a year..
