Portland area insight?

Hi,

Probably don't hear it going this way as much as the other, but I am in Tucson and there is a chance my wife and I would be moving to the Portland area. I have been there a few times, but where would be a good place to settle? Looking for good upper middle class value vs. the "Hipster" place to live where you have to pay a super premium to be with the Hipsters.

Also, are there any good off-road places in Oregon, or has it gone total enviro protectionist. Love single track etc.

Lots of good places to live and ride in Oregon. You two will have to map out what you want and drive around a bit to get a feel for what you like.

There are LOTS of fun places to ride in Oregon. From ocean to desert and everything in between. Good luck with the move.

That said, I really liked living in Milwaukie the 5 years I spent up there. Most towns outside of Multnomah County aren't too bad. Great riding over there, Tillamook is awesome! Nestucca rules.

There's lots of good areas in all directions from the Hipster central area of the inner neighborhoods and east side of Portland. Traffic can suck, crossing from East to West so I'd be looking to pick one side or the other based on where you'll be commuting to.

For me, if I was to do it again, I'd pick areas on the sides of the valleys. If east, I'd be looking to Boring, Estacada or Sandy direction. Bit further out there, but very rural and closer to excellent riding on Mt Hood area, 8 months of the year (Low snow levels kill the riding in winter).

If you can go West, you have access to tons of trails up in the Tillamook State Forest. Browns Camp, Diamond Mill, Trask Mountain, Nestucca, Jones Creek are all major OHV areas with 100's of trails. You can ride that area year round, but sometimes winter trails are a bit limited. You also have the coast closer, which is always nice. Including excellent dune riding if you are into that type of thing. If you can make it to foothills like Banks, Yahmill, Carlton are pretty close to those mountains. Gotta watch that commute though. The west side has lots of nice sububan areas, and lots of ugly suburban areas. But it's a wide open area with lots of nice homes as well. Also consider skyline, Helvetia etc are other areas that have nice riding near by. Lots to choose from, just have to look around a bit.

Yup what Scott said. He knows his shtuff..... Just gotta watch him a bit or hell suggest the areas with the best taverns. :)
