I'm getting much better. I'm in a moonboot, and am moderately mobile, but it's still a bit uncomfortable. I get x-rayed again in 1.5 weeks to see how things are getting on.
I'm trying to enjoy the sit-and-do-nothing phase while it lasts. Getting the ankle working again, and seeing what is left of my strength and fitness is going to be a shock to the system

I have to say I'm mildly envious of your anti-cankle socks. Extremely un-envious of the rest of your setup though. I hope things go well with the specialist tomorrow.

Hey Steve, sorry to read this. That's quite the run of bad luck.

Haven't checked in here much lately, but enough to remind me to take care on my improvised scaffolding and such around the house.

MAn oh man...see you should have gone for a ride round makara or something instead of contemplating house maintenance...

on the beamer front all the sidestand bits seemed fine,no huge play in the pivot ot the spring attachment plate.All the parts seemed very similar.Will get another pair of spring though so you can have yours back

For those that are interested, here are the Xrays. My Doctor is very pleased with progress. Has said that I can have another 32 days off, & that I might be able to get the brace off in 8 weeks. I can ride after that (but I am conscious I can't ride offroad unltil I am confident I can pick Gus up). No Physio. He warned ACC might try to push this, but that it could do more long term damage.

Hi Steve. I admire your positive attitude dealing with this injury - I guess it could have been worse but I'm glad it wasn't.

OK so I'm no doctor but one of those vertebrae looks thinner - compressed(?)- than the others. What is the most positive outcome from it? Will it mend but still be thinner or will it decompress over time. What causes the pain? has the disc been pushed out & putting pressure on the sciatic nerve - There seems to be a healthy gap where the disc is so that must be a good thing.

If you were over here I'd have a go at pulling your spine bits out, giving them a clean, lube (non moly of course) & reassemble. If I gave the broken bits a lite grind I reckon some of my welding would hold back together quite well. Actually just give me a call when you are coming over & I'll shift some stuff from the workbench.

All I can say is that I'm thankful I'm not on Nelson then.

I've put up the front view of the spine as well. Yes, the vertebrae is compressed & fractured. The compression puts pressure on nerves as they exit the spinal column, resulting in pain & altered sensation. Potentially, I'll be shorter than I was.

I don't know the answers to your questions. I think of this as an over extension injury. I'm guessing the weakness in the back / legs is in part due to torn muscle / ligament. My orthopaedic surgeon is confident that things will heal with no intervention (except needing to wear the brace), & no longer term issues.

• Could not recommend the mod for undamaged frames
• The supporting frame jig is still in place & may be required for some time yet. Cosmetically ugly.
• The area where the damage has been repaired is missing supporting cabling (noticeable dent in the bodywork), but appears to be becoming work hardened.
• The frame has good straight line stability, but no good if thrown into bends. (Think a Harley with floorboards).
• Seated positioning is fine for a limited time (DRZ seat).
• Performs better once on the move.
• Side & centre stands are weak & collapse if asked to support the frame stand still for any length of time.
• Overall, the frame is noticeably slower than pre-repair & is lacking endurance - but appears to be improving as mileage increases
• Fuel overflow still has some sporadic issues, which creates a feedback loop, overheats the engine, & slows the whole system down.

The longest break I’ve had from work for 17 years… And I don't have to do the dishes, or make the bed...
