Well, this has dragged on, hasn't it? But now we've essentially booked tickets to Russia, it's almost time to get off this:

Wheel bearings...
Some wisdom if you please...
![]() When the wheels were re-done, I got the bearings done also. I understand that they seat against the hub, so the following may not be a problem, but first - let's compare with this post: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showp...7&postcount=21 The R100GS spacer in the hub has collars that center it and line up to the bearing's inner race. Looking back at my pic, they were left out and it's all floaty floaty in there. Is it necessary to centre this spacer? What's its purpose? I'd actually like to leave it as-is if I can get away with it, 'cause that means I could tap them out if required on the road.

I'm not familiar with the " modern' BMWs but they run ball bearings? The spacer as far as I know playing with other bikes is to prevent loading of the bearing when you tighten up the axle.
I did the Guzzi recently and the spacer was able to be moved with your finger, fitted together all good with no apparent tightness. I have been painting my house over summer.....mainly the basement , soffits and barge boards as its brick and tile with aluminium windows....was never a fan of 70's houses until this year..... Did you say Russia? ![]() Its amazing what you can do with a deadline.....I built up a kombi to go overseas and had to tidy up the house for rent years ago.... nothing like painting in the dark with lamps..... and jogging between jobs...

I like the prospect of a simpler bearing change out on the Steppes.

Pop the side seals in each bearing, & pack a bit more grease in. Standard they have 'sufficient' to run the bearing, but more grease will keep water & dirt out. If there's too much in there, it'll just spit it out anyway, but won't damage anything.
