M4C is a good forum. It's got guys that are solid *users* of the product. AR15.com is the mega AR forum, but it's got a lot of guys that are ravid fanbois.

As for "mil-spec," I think that's a good baseline, honestly. It doesn't mean "the best," it just means that it's built to a spec and will, likely, perform to that spec. A lot of "just as good" hobby guns work fine for the amount of plinking a lot of users do. But serious users have often found that "just as good" isn't just as good. Also, for a home defense gun, buy the best you can. Maybe that's a plinker-grade hobby gun and that's certainly better than nothing. But get the best one can afford--and as much ammo as you can find.

Me? I need ammo! I've got more ability to store ammo than ammo itself. I kept hoping 5.56 would drop into the 30-ish cents range. D'oh! Lately I've been buying buckshot because 1) I can find it and 2) it's hardly any more expensive than what little 5.56 that I can find.

Question: I have an AR pistol and wanted to add a angled fore grip like the one pictured here:

Is it legal? I've ben told it makes the pistol an AOW (any other weapon).

Is there some sort of consensus for this?

I have seen it argued both ways....

I was at the local shop that is a Wilson dealer to see what 1911's they had in stock. The only one was used and he showed me a Wilson AR from the same owner. I've never seen one before. Anyone have experience with them. I know they make great 1911's but this one used was twice the price of a Daniel Defense before the surge.

They have/had three different models I think. Tactical(carbine), recon, and precision

I have seen it argued both ways....

I used to have a .pdf of the BATFE letter talking about this...check for yourself to be sure, but my recollection is that as long as whatever you add doesn't facilitate "shouldering" the weapon it's still a pistol. A cheek weld is not shouldering the weapon.

There was some nonsense about a guy wanting to put a cane tip on his pistol buffer tube and it sparked a long debate that eventually led someone to get a ruling from the BATFE.

Bottom line: you should be fine w/an AFG but if in doubt ask your local agent.
