replaced regulator/rectifier (06 Buell Ulysses)
on my 06 ulysses and it's still not charging. i put the new plug on the bike side to. put the wires on the same side that the old plug had them on in relation to the lock on the plug. do i have them backwards or should i be looking to replace the stator now as well.
this bike has been one of the best most fun i've ever riden. it does everything i've asked with no complaints so i'd like to get her up and going again. runs good now until the battery gets low

Yup.
Sorry, I could add more words, but it comes down to that. You can check the stator before buying a new one though. Use a multimeter and measure the voltages from each wire from the stator to ground, or between each pair. Should all be in the 60-70V AC range and all the same. You need someone with a manual to get exact numbers and where you should measure. (a $10 eBay meter is fine for this) Pete |

It doesn't matter on a three phase stator which wire goes to which wire on the regulator (as long as it is the input wires from the stator connection).
Your stator was most likely taken out by your regulator when it died, probably due to high resistance at the plug connection from the description you gave. As stated you can disconnect the stator plug and check the three charging wires against each other in AC Voltage mode on your voltmeter. If you have less than 60+ it is done. Sounds like the insulation between the wires on the stator was made too hot and melted. Now one of the wires (or all three) are shorted together. If really interested you can rewind your own stator, but most dont think it is worth their time and buy a replacement. If you put the same style plug back on make sure you put dielectric grease in the connection to keep out moisture to prevent mor corrosion. I know you said you already bought the regulator - too bad if you didn't get a MOSFET based unit to replace the OEM one. They generate less heat then the SCR based ones. Just read that many people on Buell forums have used: http://www.customrewind.co/home_mf.htm to rewind their stators. I have no experience with them.

just to be clear, the new regulator had the new style plug on it for the winding wires. the plug i replaced is the one from the regulator to the battery. don't know if i have those on the right side or not. haven't had enough spare time to check it again either. lifes not really cooperating right now. thanks for the link and info

when i got it the chain was not adjusted just right, real jerky. i adjusted it and it smoothed out. don't know if it was already hurt or failed later. my first indication that something was wrong was the stator stopped charging. the clutch plates where holding it centered i guess. it was being grabby at stop lights but i'd just put a set of barnetts in it, the race clutches. adjusted them a few times. it straitened up and i didn't think much else about it. like i said it just stopped charging. i finnally got a chance to tear it down the other day and found needle bearing pieces in the rotor so i started looking at everything else real hard but it didn't take long to find. to tell you the truth, i'm getting excited about being able to ride it again. when it's right, it's an awe inspiring bike for sure.

Nice video showing the problem you found. Maybe post it on Badweb so others can look for a potential problem when they have the primary apart?
