Day 3
We wake up after a nice sleep and consume the included breakfast at the Best Western.
Then mount up and head out along the shore of Lake Chilean. ![]() The road turn to dirt soon enough. ![]() ![]() Right off the bat we are going to ride what Touratech calls "The Jungle" section of the WABCDR. Riding the route like we did, from north to south, would mean this would be an steep long incline for us. It's tight with vegetation and plenty of tight switchbacks, soft power sand with a baby head size rock or three, in the mix at these turns. Bruce and John already ahead I didn't want Mike to be taking the rear alone in case the GSA needed to be wrighted. There were no shipyards with dry docks for miles ![]() So when I caught him flushing out the morning breakfast right before we crossed into "the Jungle" ![]() I waited. ![]() After Mike lost a little weight in the porta potty, he blitzed ahead and I gave him a wide berth. The climb out of Lake Chilean was steep. ![]() ![]() Slowly and steadily the route lifted us above Lake Chilean on a southerly course. The views were spectacular, the air was clean and the temps were dropping as we gained elevation. ![]() ![]() And the trail would close in. Almost engulfing both rider and bike, all the while still rising at a good rate. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I was just amazed that I was not seeing Mike & his Panzer capsized on one the of tight sandy turns. Incredibly, he piloted the bike all the way to the top like it was a, well, a 650 ! ![]() And there he is. ![]() John already up there waiting our arrival. ![]() I emerge ![]() The big lake can still be seen. ![]() We high five & take in the landscape ![]() Bruce way out ahead, John and Mike start up and continue. I would sit down, alone, with no rush to be anywhere. I just took in the moment.

Day 3 continued
I mount up and move on taking the tail gunner position.
![]() Excellent trail lie ahead ![]() The WR threading it's way through the Cascades ![]() ![]() ![]() We would leap frog each other throughout most of the day. Each of us had the routed loaded in the our GPS units, so there was no need to eat each others dust or stick close together. You stopped when ever you had the urge too. Got back on at will. Makes for a nice relaxed, unhurried ride. Here's Brucee just sitting back taking it easy. John ![]() In and out of what appeared to be old burns. Sometime lush green.... sometimes not. ![]() Now I must say, bike traffic on the WABDR was surprisingly busy. We are not used to this on our trips. But it was Labor Day weekend. We stopped for lunch in Ardenvoir before we took on Moe Ridge. The Uptown Cafe getting an obvious economic boost from the WABCDR ![]() All these riders however were riding the route south to north. ![]() After lunch. ![]() Ellensburg was are stop tonight. We had some ground to cover. ![]() Again, spectacular riding. ![]() ![]() ![]() A regroup and ear plug pull session(Bruce )

Hi Frank! Looks like another excellent ride! The pictures are great. Looking forward to more. Was the DR 650 the right choice for this one?

Well, yes there was the Tailor, oops there I go again , Taylor Bridge fire that had us worried it would cut us off from Ellensburg. But the great USFS had it under control by that time. There were many though! It seamed our timing was not only good with the weather but also with wildfires.

Good timing - weather and wild fires
There have been a couple of mentions of the wild fires.
Maybe even more amazing than the great weather was how we managed to avoid the fires. There were fires in some of the areas where we rode in the weeks prior to our arrival. And a significant fire in the weeks just after we rode through that completely closed some of the sections of the WABDR.
