Used KTM buying advice
I'm thinking about getting a used KTM 400 XC-W. I found one locally that seems to be in good shape (although I've only given it a cursory look). Are there anythings specifically that I should be looking for?
Frame and other obvious mechancial issues are easy enough, but what about the things I cannot see visually? The bike has 100 hours on it (as advertised) - what maintenance should I expect the bike to have at that point (other than standard oil changes). The listing price is $4,995 - general opinions on that? If all of the mechanicals seem up and up, I'm thinking of offering i $4,500. Thanks in advance! |

What year? The 08's had some issues, better in 09 and fixed by 2010.

Going to see the bike tomorrow - very excited. Really would appreciate some feedback on any subtleties that I should be looking for...

Quiz the owner on maintenance - how often was the oil changed, always w/ filter? And the air filter?
Does the owner seem knowledgeable about the bike? Strike you as someone who takes care of their stuff? What does their garage/house/yard/the rest of their stuff look like? Well cared for? Looking the bike over - Is it cleaned up ready to sell? Look at the brake pads - good thickness? Rotors look good (no deep grooves/scratches). Spokes all there and not loose or corroded? Rims straight? If you can, get the wheels off the ground and spin them - everything look true, no weird noises? If you lift on the front wheel, is there movement in the headstock? Any sign of oil leaks? - look at the countershaft sprocket area and around the gear shift shaft for weepage. Chain and sprockets look good/run smoothly. Is the chain adjusted properly/not too tight? What about the fasteners - any rounded heads? are they rusty? any missing? Is the oil drain plug buggered up? Air filter clean and properly oiled? Is there a bead of grease on the rim (of the air filter, where it sits in the airbox)? If you pulled the airfilter to look - is the intake beyond clean? All the electrics work? A couple of minor fails on the above may be OK, a repeating pattern of fails is not.

You can tell a lot about the bike by talking to the owner and looking at his shop.
