Oh Man!...I'd definitely lose stuff in the process. Ahh but what the hell eh...a few lost/reused gaskets & bolts here and there should be fine
 Just like the sealer's would do. Great blow by blow thanks for posting...now I need a few weeks to think about doing it myself.

I've initiated Water Pump rebuild on my bike. I know that if something is wrong I should notice coolant in the oil, but I actually noticed oil in the coolant.
Has anyone observed oil in coolant and is rebuilding the water pump going to fix it?

It goes both ways, when the oil pressure drops water will pass the seal, when the oil pressure climbs the oil goes into the water.. In any case its kinda the lowest cost place to start and its a maintenance item so you don't lose. Most other causes would have symptoms that are significant..
