I tried shade cloth as a ground sheet but found it to be bulky and heavy when wet. Ended up with a sheet of tyvek which is lightweight and verry difficult to spike and it packs tight.

Thanks Andy, I will take you up on that offer next time i'm down near Brisvegas! I started to fab some brackets for the bait boxes behind the faring but had to go back to work.

Things left to do;
12v fuse blocks and plugs up front
Install spot and Iphone mounts
Wire up GPS
Install new tyres (Back, Mitas E09, Front Michy M21 or Dunlop D606)
Mouse tubes or heavy duty tubes??????
Adjust suspension and sag
New Oil and filters including air filter
New seat

Anything else I need to do?

Things needed to buy;
Sleeping bag
Exped 7 mat
Pillow
Tank bag
Air hawk 2 scrotum massager
Heated Grips?????? Do I need them????
Tyres
Subframe bolts

Things bought;
Fly DS helmet
KTM rally jacket and pants
2 Man tent
Andy Strapz Panniers and liners
49l dry bag
New Lithium Battery 400 CCA
Rally raid Tanks
Rally raid faring and sticker kit
I have a UHF with helmet kit from a previous ride

I would like to camp as much as possible

What am I missing??
I used Kmart pool filter socks as air filter skins, get a pack of 4 and slightly oil them and fit them over your air filter and that way you can change the sock every couple of days and just do an air filter wash and reoil at the midpoint tyre change.
You need some mounting or supports for the panniers, they need to be very secure.
I just used heavy duty tubes and carried one spare standard thickness front tube only as long as you keep the tyre pressures at 25psi in the gnarly stuff you should be good unless you pick up a roofing screw or something. Plenty of places to replenish your spare tube if you use one along the way.
If time and money allows a couple of LED spots to get you out the shit if you get stuck running late one night, shit does happen !!
Rear rack for your dry bag, 49litres is big !!
Pack light if you're not riding you will be sleeping or fixing your bike or someone elses, with the odd rumbo thrown in, so make like Bear Grylls and just pack enough to survive, as if you are a hiker.
Heated grips are dirt cheap and well worth the effort, they can dry out soggy motorcross gloves in a heartbeat even if it doesn't get too cold.
My reworked seat only cost $250 and it is a ripper, John Moorehouse down at Capalaba does a great job, I have his mobile if you need it.

I will be taking the bike to Fraser island for a test run for a night next week to catch up with friends and will post some pictures with the racks/panniers and dry bag on.
It will be a good little test to see how it goes.
Fingers crossed the chair arrives before then....

Its like plastic paper and its main use is in the building industry as a membrane. You can only buy it on a big roll but some ebay sellers have it cut to length.

Forgot the most important thing, "good old fashioned braces" to keep your trousers up, everyone I rode with agreed they were the shizzle because getting up and sitting down all down everyday made your trousers sit like a hip hop rapper dude, wazzup.

charity ride

I just raised $300 at our local Rotary club for charity.

What I did was divide the APC 4 day event next week into 50 Km. sections and sold them for $10 each.
If the owner of the section chooses the section that I come to grief on then they win $50. If I finish then all $300 goes to the anti cancer council/relay for life.

I called it crash & burn lotto.

Um, you have a history, sorry.
Can I cover the whole event for $100?
Not trying to put the knocker on ya or anything.......

And re your bike....... Damn, that seat looks painful already. Air hawk?
Take your time, enjoy. If you've done your prep, you'll be fine. You don't need to be super fit, but time in the saddle before the event will pay dividends. You may be a bit sore by day three, but will push through it. There will be plenty of time in 'transport' sections to relax and recover.

Best tip I can give is:
Make sure you stop before dark.
First thing each night when getting to camp/pub, check the bike over. Tyre pressures, wobble wheels and swing arms looking for bearing play, check brake pads, oil level, coolant level. Inspect hoses, clean and lube chain.

Then into the beers ;)

Ya get into a routine. Best bit is the ride. Enjoy the terrain, JH puts a hell of a lot of time into the course to make it as enjoyable as possible. There may be challenges, but if you get through you'll appreciate the harder bits. I found in 2012 each day was better than the last, for different reasons.

Wish I was doing it again, a couple of mates are heading off again this year, jealous as hell.

Enjoy.

almost fuilly subscribed

There is one section left ( 250-300 km) section 5 that is still unsold.

A lot of guys wanted to put money on a DNS (failed to make the start line)after last year!

I have an air hawk, but the seat concepts saddle is pretty good.

Being bike fit is always a good idea, but for the 4 day I have had busy weekends up until the event.

I will do my best to quash my youthful exuberence (what is left of it) and pace myself. Thanks for the advice Richo.
