This is what my bike looked like when I bought it in June 2011. (Not my bike but mine looked exactly the same)

How it sits now.

MODS:

2006 DR650 20,055 miles

Switched from blue to all white plastic and 2009 white tank
2009 Black seat
Polisport Supermoto front fender
Low profile front blinkers
LED rear license plate mounted blinkers
Procycle tail cleanup kit
Fatbars
Underbar mirror
MSR Pro raptor clutch perch with shorty lever
R6 quick throttle tube
Scott MX2 Grips
Grip heaters
Zeta Bar end sliders
Zeta engine plugs
Zeta oil filler cap
Flashing LED tail light bulb
HID 5k 35w headlight conversion
Warp9 supermoto wheels
Michelin Pilot Power 3 tires 150/70/17 & 120/70/17
520 chain coversion 15/44 gearing
Axle sliders homemade
TM40 carb
Twinair filter
SS front brake line
Eibach rear spring
Eiback fork springs
Ricor Intiminator fork valves
Superbrace fork brace
Sealsavers
Ballistic Evo 8 cell lithium battery (under 2 lbs)
Removed battery box
Removed passenger foot pegs/brackets
Removed rear grab bars
No orange lenses on bike
Trailtech vapor mounted in bar pad
GSX-R 35F0 muffler
Keintech mid-pipe
Polished stock header

The only thing that I still want to do, is either the high compression piston or the 790 kit. Depends on how ambitious I get this winter.

I basically tried to make it look like how a factory DR650sm should look if Suzuki ever released one.

How do those happy trails boxes impact handling?

I've got home made Mermite Panniers on my nighthawk, wondered if I could use them on the DR. Little worried about the handling. I've read about tank slappers at speed.

NO issues at all. I have pushed it all the way, stays straight.

@ southforkspeedster

I hope you can see on the pictures what I made. It is quite similar to distech DR. I took the seedmeter out and a vapor in. I use the rack from the lamp to hold my new construction for the screen and the cockpit.

Have a look to the Distech rebuild also
