Well, I'm all set. Driving down to Palm Springs tomorrow and scheduled to pick up a new (to me) 2011 Wrr. Going to drive it back to Salt Lake via the back roads in Nevada in an attempt to stay as low and dry as possible back up here. Pics to follow :)

Deadblow hammer or rubber mallet... remove axle nut (27mm), loosen the four pinch bolts around axle, tap with hammer to remove. If it's gritty or stuck you may have to use a drift (I use a 3/8" extension) to tap it once the nut end of the axle is inside the left fork. The end with the hex is not threaded, but larger than the part of the axle that goes through the wheel, so once you drive it 2" or so (width of the fork leg) it's easily removed.

I hadn't touched or started my lil quarter pounder since August when I screwed up my quadriceps tendon. Had to air up both tires, turned on the key.... and it fired right up Took a little put around the yard and the culdesac. Felt good.

I only use it at home for axle holding convenience. Not in the field.

You might be able to get away with flipping a spark plug socket around and using the hex end if it fits in the opening. Did this with a Triumph once.

All this talk about hex keys and backwards sockets . . . just loosen the axle nut before you loosen the pinch bolts, and vice-versa when you tighten it up. I never realized it was that complicated

It's sometimes useful to be able to turn the axle to get it out. I use the back end of a spark plug socket to do that.

Exactly. And if one needs to get the axle out..leave axle nut on a couple threads..and tap with rubber mallet..enough to grab, un-weight wheel, and pull out by hand. .

I set the fork location on the T clamp using the axle as a guide. Basically, I slip the axle through, loosen the opposite clamp and wiggle the fork enough to slide the axle home easily. I can poke the axle out with my finger if the forks are matched in their T clamps.
