Screen was not clear and bright inside the box. Touch screw was almost unusable.

Samsung Rugby Smart. Ruggedized smart phone. I've dropped mine, stepped on it, use it as a GPS when riding and also to listen to music in the shower. From what I understand it can be used to make phone calls and text too :) I don't know why all phones aren't built to mil-spec ruggedized standards. I also carry a ruggedized Olympus camera.

I got 4 years of service from my 1030sw. Used on the bike in all conditions. Rain, snow, sleet, below freezing, dry, dusty, hot...
Went perfectly.
The second time I snorkeled with it, the LCD died.

My new Canon waterproof camera takes much better photos, but the lens doesn't have a cover.

Tires

I just discovered this thread and I am sure this has been addressed but I could not find it. My 2006 DR650 eats rear tires. Best I get is 5000 miles. Any recommendations? I am probably 80/20 street to dirt.

Ahh, keep doing what you are doing...I've never gotten 5000 miles out of a rear tire on ANY motorcycle I have owned. My DR is usually due around 3500-4000 depending on the tire.

I'm sure someone will come along saying they get 10K... they must count miles hauled on the trailer or something.

break pedal mod?

Has anyone put the 95 and earlier folding brake pedal on a 96 up bike? If so, please pm me. I'm interested in what it took to do it and how it turned out.

I'm sure many others will chime in, but I thought I was getting excellent mileage from my rear tires on my dr650se (compared to my xr650l) and I only averaged slightly better than that, and ran them down to almost completly bald. I was mostly running kenda k270's and average riding mix street/dirt. Depending on what actual tires you are running and riding style and how much tread left at changeover, there can be a dramatic difference. I wouldnt be surprised to see people ranging from 2500 to 8000 as the most common range (with you being about the middle). Compared to street bikes with high quality tires that doesnt seem all that good, but from what I've seen I think your somewhere in the normal range. Just my .02 ymmv.

Like others have said, that's normal. It's not the bike; it's the tires. I run Shinko 705's and can get 6000 out of a rear tire but it's stretching it. If I run a full knobby, it'll be quite a bit less.

I think your tire choice depends on what kind of riding you do and how long it takes you to put 3,000-4,000 miles on your bike. If it takes you a year to put on 4,000 miles, then get a cheaper tire.

If you buy more expensive tires like MEFO explorer 99 or Heidenau K60 scout you can get almost 2x the mileage (7,000-8,000) for about 2x the price (~$160) . More money up front but they last a fairly long time. They are both very good road tires and both are good on gravel, dirt and rocks. Mud and sand?....use something else.

I use them and like them. You end up riding on nice round tires for 6,000 miles, then putting the last 1000-1500 on squared off tires. If you use a tire that wears out every 4,000 miles you spend a lot more of your time on squared off tires.

You also don't spend as much time putting on new tires and you can take longer trips. I'll be heading for Mexico this Spring and I just put on a MEFO rear and a Heidenau front. They'll be worn out when I return, but they should both last the whole trip.

Voted. Who knew KLR owners had computers? Didn't know you could fashion those out of milk crates...

Ha Ha I have a DRZ, so I voted DR. I just sold my DR last year, and I was a awesome bike. Some one was wondering about a tire for the 50/50 , whoops should I say 60 hyw/ 40 off road that might last longer . Heidenau K60 Scouts. It will be a long time before you ever change a tire again !!!
