Ignition coil on CR8EIX

At the moment I am in the process of replacing the spark plugs on the 950SE. I wanted to try irridium so I ordered the CR8EIX instead of the CR8EK.

Now I notice that the top contact for the ignition coil is different with the CR8EIX compared to the CR8EK.

In the picture below you can see the difference. At the top the CR8EK has a thin threaded contact for the ignition coil. At the top the CR8EIX has a thicker and longer unthreaded contact for the ignition coil.



With the CR8EIX, the spark plug contact doesn't fully insert in the ignition coil contact, so the ignition coil doesn't fully insert in the spark plug tube:



When looking inside (from above) the thick unthreaded contact, it looks like there is the same thin threaded contact as the CR8EK has, and it seems like the thick part just needs to be removed prior to installation. The thick part has an inside thread. I tried to remove the thick part with already a fair amount of force, but unsuccessful. Can someone confirm this has to be removed or not? And if so: just with brutal force?
Or am I missing something else?

You are correct the thick part is threaded on and you should be able to use a pair of pliers to unscrew it on the new sparkplug. It will look like and work just like the one you are replacing it with.

Unscrew it with some pliers (usually comes off by hand)

Some of the NGK range come with the terminal as a single large piece, does not unscrew.

On the NGK Iridium plug I turned down the top contact area to fit ignition coil.

Thanks for the confirmation. It needed to be unscrewed yes. This time I used heavier pliers (which were needed, the cap was very thight screwed on the thread).

2 other things:

- I installed with the washer that came with the spark plug (the original spark plug also had a washer)

- the threads on the original spark plug contact to contact the ignition coil were damaged. I assume this was because of pushing the coil on the threads (instead of screwing the coil on the spark plug).
Is the ignition coil supposed to be pushed on the spark plug and are the threads intended to be damaged in the process?

The ignition coil tip has a springy thing that makes contact with the sparkplug threads.
It may damage them a little, but honestly, who cares :)
Btw: yes, you must push the coil all the way down.

Funny, even the plugs I've bought that were supposed the run the threads, came with the thimble for the top..

I turned mine down because I was afraid I would have damaged the expensive Iridium plug attempting to remove the cap. It must have required significant force to remove the cap?
