RPM gauge install on G650X

I have a Trail Tech digital rev gauge to install to my XChallenge. I have a similar setup of a couple of Hondas - just wrap the wire from the gauge around the spark plug lead a few times and tape up. On the BMW however there are two coils each sitting directly on top of each plug without any lead in between

Has anyone installed a rev counter on a G650X before? Can I just wrap the wire around the sparkplug boot?

I have installed it two ways.
1) just wrap around base of rubber boot (easier on the right hand plug - feed wire from below)
2) expose copper lead and splice into brown power wire in 3 wire harness leading into the coil (either coil)

#2 seemed to be the faster response time, so I left it that way.
