The early 80's stands I have have had have a pressed steel drop down lever instead of the bar on yours. I thought the bar appeared later. Is yours definitely an early 80's?

I'd run dual-crossover systems on all of my bikes, if the centerstand
location did not make that so difficult. You can see from BMW's
struggle with the 1981-84 centerstands that even a team of brilliant
BMW engineers were somewhat stymied by the problem of raising a 500-lb
motorcycle with half the lever length that they had before. I've
probably doodled a hundred ideas for fixing that issue, including
hydraulic and pneumatic methods. None were viable market-wise.

The electric centerstand system fitted to the bottom of a K1200LT
weighs about the same as an R65.

'82 R100S. Always been a bit of a bastard to get onto the centerstand. It has the stamped steel deployment tang, and the textured, sort-of-square, steel foot placement pad. The stock sidestand became worn enough to be a concern, so I replaced that with a Brown's side stand. I pretty much only use the centerstand when I'm doing maintenance on the bike.

As far as I know that is the stock stand, but that's why I asked Charles to post those pictures for me. The R100 is new to me but everything appears original.

I think that the earlier stands have 2 crosspieces, I don't know about post 84 stands.

Same with my 83 R80 and it's a bastard to get on to the centrestand, I will look at rewelding the stops (mine are worn) but the bushings and pivots are in good order. It is a nasty design and the one thing I dislike about the bike.

Hi Blue,

Just trying to figure out what the 81 machines had as standard. I know my mates worked a treat with the original stand since it was fitted with a new replacement is now so awkward to pull on the stand he doesn't use it any more. Motobins list a different spring for the 81 machines so there must be difference, they don't have any stands though --> http://www.motobins.co.uk/displayfin...RTS&model=R100

I gave PYCymru a stand with the tang and the chequered foot and it cured his problems with getting his RS on it's stand.

I'd love to know what's supposed to go on each year.

My 75 has 2 cross pieces and is a delight to use. The stand on my 82 is a recent replacement (3 years ago) , it's ok on a bare bike and better than the original stand.

So did Bmw revise the design of the 81-84 stand. They did so with the side stand.

My 78 100/7 has two crosspieces and as yours is very easy to use.

I've recently bought an 81 that has a stand with a single crosspiece, a checked plate on the left hand foot of the stand for pressing it down with and a folded steel tang for dropping the stand down. I have an 83 R80TIC with a single crosspiece, no chequered plate and a straight steel bar coming out of the side for dropping the stand, very similar to Blues stand in your photograph but without the bend in the side bar.

The 81 also has shorter springs than the later stand.

Be nice to get to the bottom of this. I suspect that many of the 81/early 82 machines are fitted with the wrong stands.

If the stand mounting bracket (welded to the frame) is the same, and in the same position on bikes of the surrounding year or so, it can only come down to how long the stand is? Which would come down to how high the front wheel comes off the ground when the bike is on the c/stand?
On a level surface, my front wheel is about 70mm off the ground.

This centre stand fits my 11/1981 R100RS. Single crosspiece.


It's essentially identical to the one I have on the bike.

However, modifications have made them different, but it's minor.

This is the one I have on the bike. Notice the extra bits added to the ground contact area. The foot lowering tang is modified..beefier and more curved to the underside of the exhaust.


The spare is essentially unused, but I suspect it was removed from its original home when the tang snapped. The repair is a little rough.


Hey Jeff, would a little anti-rust paint control that corrosion?
