Anyone know what this is?
At the annual classic racing festival here in NZ and this was on display. It's what we'd call a bitza - bitza this and bitza that.
The guys who found it, literally, in a barn, want to know what the engine is and so far no-one has been able to tell them. Any clues from the knowledgeable on here would be appreciated. It runs, by the way. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I wish I could help. Are there valve springs in the combustion chamber? I don't think it's a two stroke, is it?

Definitely a 4stroke, both the cylinder and head are cast as single unit. The pine cone plugs allow you to drop valves in. I'd say late 1920s ajs, matchless..

Why are the plugs so tall?

Oops, it's a four stroke so shouldn't be in this section.
However, led by sound information from Mr Gatorjane it appears to be a 1928 Enfield 350 side valve. And it still runs. Fantastic. |

I assume the "fins" help to cool the valve area. I'm currently working on a 32 Matchless, same set-up, top end is is one casting with the tall alloy plugs.
There is something amazing about an 85 year old bike that's still a daily rider. Yes this in the wrong thread. Ken |
