Love that poem

Just seen the poem and I love it, brought back so many memories and thoughts.

Mikey it's raining here in London so make sure you have your waterproofs...and bring some jump leads as my battery is playing up!

Miss you man.

Mike's Bike

On Monday 7th March, I picked up Mike's KTM from Auckland.

I intend to restore Mike's bike. I have started a project thread to share the progress of restoring it. You can read it here.

one year on....

Last weekend was the first anniversary of Mikey’s accident. It’s still hard to believe he was stolen from us so soon. A few months ago we decided to scatter his ashes in a place called Oponae in the Waioeka Gorge which is between Opotiki & Gisborne. Oponae seems appropriate as a literal translation means “The Food Basket” and as anyone knowing Mike knows he loved his food.

The folks planned the what/where/how etc and did a great job. Family, friends & loved ones came from all over to be there to commemorate a special day. One person who we can’t thank enough for coming is Simon Wilson. Simon & Mike started this trip together and along with Hans Helbig he ensured Mike was taken care of after his accident. It was awesome to finally be able to thank him in person. Hans, you’re next !!!

Saturday morning and Grumpy (Dad aka Draincleaner) was cracking the whip to make sure everyone was set to leave @ 10am as it’ll take approx 2.5 hours to get to our destination. The support van was loaded, bikes were ready – quick photo and we’re off !!!

You may recognize the bike in the middle, yep it’s the KTM – you can read about how it found its way to NZ here and once again we owe a big thanks to Peet for doing an amazing job.

So we left just after 10am and it was a fairly smooth ride until we got just outside of Whakatane. Then the heavens opened up and she bucketed down. It was pretty much non stop all the way to Oponae – think Peet summed it up aptly:
“We rode from Tauranga to the Waioeka Gorge in possibly some of the heaviest, nastiest & shittiest weather I have ever ridden in. Seriously, down to 40-50k's at some points with squalls of rain pushing waves along the road in front of us. A car going the other way hit a sheet of water, and the spray that hit me was like being doused with a 20 litre pail of water.“

These photo's just don't do it justice

Once in Oponae the van was unloaded, the bbq fired up and it was beer o’clock. It was also a good time for the riders to try dry out…

We bought a couple of small trees down with us and after combining some of Mike’s ashes with a good dose of Guinness, we planted them & said goodbye in our own way....

The remaining ash was carried away by the wind......

Soon after it was time for a quick coffee and goodbyes. A very big thanks to all in the below photo (and our photographer) for coming along & everyone else who has spared a thought for Mikey. If anyone is heading thru the gorge feel free to stop in & say gidday & check on the trees....

I've finally started going through Mike's photo's and will post up a few which I really like. Either because they're just bloody fantastic shots, or because they remind me so much of Mikey. My apologies if they're been posted earlier.

I've only just discovered this sad news of Mikey.

I enjoyed reading of his adventure and had exchanged emails with him a while back regarding this...

What an absolute shame.

Damn worst end to a trip ever, indeed.

Love the tribute ride though - the only way we can be immortal, is by being remembered.

RIP.

2 years...

It's 2 years today since we lost our Mikey. It seems like ages ago.

But it only seems like yesterday we were having a beer and laughing together.

Still missing you bud.

I'll have a few beers with you tonight.

Edit... To absent friends...
