Starting in Las Vegas - Any suggestions?

Hello fellow ADV riders. My brother and I are taking a little break from from the cold Minnesota winter and are flying to Las Vegas

on March 7th. I have rented us two R1200GS's from the 8th until the 11th. I thought we'd take in Valley of Fire SP, Death Valley NP, Mojave, Joshua Tree NP, Lake Havasu area, a little Route 66, etc...Any other suggestions?

You've got a nice trip planned there for three days.

If you stay over at Joshua Tree try Pappy and Harriets in PioneerTown for food/bar/motel....you'll be glad you did

In Shoshone go to the Crowbar cafe and they also have a motel.

Laughlin is an inexpensive stop for rooms and you ought to see Oatman on Route 66.

Now for a real adventure rent 650's take hwy 15 to Primm NV turn right into the mountains (see google earth) at the big 2 star casino ($35 a night). There you will find the trail head to 1000s of miles of desert riding.....did a couple single day trips in there on the xr650r dualsport and had a blast, stayed in Vegas most nights.

No worries though your ride is going to be a hoot as planned. Check out some, of the back roads in DV, many are easily done on the GS without knobbies. If your interested in that check out the group ride thread called Death Valley March Madness Rally. Although this absolutely incredible rally is already fully booked this year I'm sure you will find some links to GPS tracks that work well for the bigger bikes. There is one ride that I remember was maybe two hours off the maim hwy and you went one way through a steep canyon (minivans Suv's also). Plus there were a few old mines.....

There are a few of these side trips that make the DV experience much better. The rally is at Panamint springs Resort in DV which has camping and a few rooms. Being from the north staying overnight in the desert is quite a treat.

The weather should be nice out here. It will still be cool in the mornings and then warm up in to the 70's. After the sun drops, it will cool down quickly. Elevation change will change the temperature quickly. Las Vegas sits at about 1500 feet. To get out of Vegas, you go uphill and the temperaures can drop fast.

Make sure you have sunblock, chapstick, and carry some extra water with you, as it is extremely dry here.

We do have some of the worst drivers in the world as well. Drunks 24/7, red light runners, people that don't know that green means go, you name it we have it. Be careful and enjoy the ride!

Hit up the saloon in Goodsprings.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody. I am really excited for the trip. I am treating my younger brother to this trip as a thank you for working with me for the last fifteen years! He is super excited. He rides a Yamaha FJR1300. This will be his first time on the GS. Should be fun!
