I was just going through some old pictures and came across this old death trap that I built a few years ago. The weeds in northern ID grow super-tough to endure the long, cold winter and lack of water in the summer. The annual problem of how to deal with them returns every spring. Even the thickest trimmer line you can buy doesn't last but a few minutes, and a blade does fine to cut the brush, but then you still have to go back and pick up what you cut. After several failed attempts with different chains and cables (and a few nearly horrific injuries....), I finally came up with a design that WORKS! The blades swing and can deflect off of rocks or trees. I can mulch a large wild rose bush down to the roots in under a minute, and it will gnaw away at trees/limbs up to 2". I just have to be careful not to use it when it is too dry, because it does throw some sparks. I also have to wear my welding leathers and a few pairs of pants, and I still get quite a few welts on my legs from the flying debris. All material was cut from an old table saw blade.
![]() ![]() ![]() EDIT: I thought I'd throw in a few pics of the failed attempts.... This is approach #3: Copper wire, soldered solid, inserted into my heavy gauge trimmer string head. Then inserted into my foot. Yeah, it hurt. ![]() Approach #7: Chain saw chain (with cutting teeth removed), welded to steel disk. One of the chains broke about 1" out from the disk and smacked me in the leg. Yeah, that hurt too, but not as bad.

How many times have you broken a snow thrower shear pin, then spent more time looking for a replacement and tools than it took to do the whole snow throwing job? I taped two spares to the top of my snow thrower:
![]() But while effective, inelegant. A little while with SolidWorks and 26 minutes in a uPrint 3D printer, and I had a "Holster" for them to stick on with double-sided tape. It's a snap fit to hold the pin in place.

can't help but wonder how the plastic will hold up to the cold. Looks like a good idea though. Something the Mfg should add to their machines.
