Esa off road settings are too confusing . What does SOFT do that COMFORT does not ? And why would i want it hard

The hard and soft only show when you are in the off road modes, which adds more spring preload front and rear. The road modes only add preload to the rear shock to adjust for luggage and passengers. The soft verus comfort are similar. Offroad the hard and soft are used for control on differant terrian. The hard is used to keep the suspension more in control so it doesn't move around as much so you can have better control on rough ground. Soft is used more for when the ground has lots of short hard stutter bumps so the suspension can react faster and follow the ground more for better control. It all depends what you like mostly, a soft comfortable ride or a hard/firm ride. Usually I find the faster you go, the harder/firmer you want it for control.

On road has three "response" modes and three preload settings. Response are normal, comfort and sport. Preload are one helmet (rider), helmet and bags (rider and loaded up) and two helmets (rider and passenger).

Off road has two "response" modes and two preload settings. Response are hard and soft. Preload are small mountains (dirt roads) and large mountains (rough terrain).

I call it response mode just because there are slight differences between years of ESA. But basically it changes how the shocks respond to bumps. Slower for softer/comfort settings and faster for the hard/sport settings. I'm sure somebody will jump in with a technical description. On my 09 it is just adjusting the rebound dampening, if I remember correctly.

The preload settings tighten/loosen the spring to control the ride height. For the on road it is just the rear shock and it is to compensate for loads and keep the bike level. For off road the large mountain setting will raise both the front and the rear to increase ground clearance.

Hope that helps.

I did a run today on some choppy gravel roads , one on comfort and one on off road regular . Off road gave me much more control and confidence . Thank you all for the info . This ESA is cool !
