So here is the re-soldered board:

This plug is rated at 1A, isnt that enough to charge/power most android phones and garmin gps?? Are the circled pins the ones that need a short? How many amps would than be supplied to the phone? I am a bit worried as I dont want to burn out my phone and GPS.

The positive connection looks good. Apply 12 volts and measure across the two outside USB pins and verify that it is still 5 volts.

For Android and the micro USB, if it thinks it is plugged into a PC, even if the charger is 1 amp, it will draw only about 300ma, That is the max many PC ports can handle. The short tells the phone it is OK to pull more power.

BUT, looking through the solder resist and such on your board, it looks to be shorted already. With power off, use an ohmmeter and see if it is nearly 0 ohms between the center two pins. Or just use it. If you are happy with the charge rate, you are good to go.

If the voltage on all pins at the USB connector is 5 volts or less, it won't harm the phone.

BTW, it looks like the LED section of the PC board get a ground through the original metal 'finger' ground. That is now removed, so the LED may no longer operate even though the unit is working.

Thanks a lot. Will try everything out when the holidays are over as I don't have a 12V supply at home, and the garage is to cold do work in so I will have to remove the battery from the bike.

When mounting everything up on the bike I would like to add a switch and inline fuse. I made a quick drawing of how I would connect everything up, is it ok??

Casejeep hit the mark....I found the application in Overland Adventure, there were a couple of them referenced on Toyos and Land Rovers; BlueSea is rated for marine applications so you know they work. I used blade connectors soldered to a quick-disconnect plug for use inside of the tankbag; there's 5 quick disconnects inside my tankbag so I can mix and match applications, and with 2x USB 2.0 ports on the BlueSea and a green power indicator, I can charge just about everything, or disconnect them all. I even went so far as to replace the Touratech lighter accessory outlet (in the protective alu-housing) and replaced it with the BlueSea USB plug, ergo it can be mounted anywhere on the bike via a clamp or tiewrapped and stay protected (you have to drill out the pop rivits to undo the housing and swap plugs, then pop rivit it back together).

MadM, what is the amperage on this? I found what I think is the same model on Amazon and they list 2.1amps. I've read that I need max 1 amp to charge/power my andriod.

It is rated 1A. I got it from dealextreme. Here is the link: Mini USB 2.0 Car Cigarette Lighter Power Adapter.

Thanks - ordered 3 in case I goof on the soldering.

What did you end up using for a switch?

I'd like to set the circuit up so that if the key switch OR usb-circuit switch is on, the USB port is on. This way I can always leave the switch off, unless I specifically need to charge while the key is off.

The tiger has a perm powered powerlet socket next to the ignition, I have added a low voltage cutout (set to 11.5V) inline and checked the power rating for this socket and wiring - good to 10A (and fused as such).
I drilled a 6mm hole in the bottom of my givi tank-lock bag.
I put a multi socket cigar adapter inside the tank bag using dual lock tape (like heavy duty velcro)

Cut the original plug off, poked the cable through hole, shortened cable to 25cm

Put one of these on the outside of the bag to plug into the powerlet socket (remove red adapter)

I got 2 x 3.1 A dual usb power to plug USB cables in directly into.

For giggles I got one of these - I don't leave it plugged in though.

Hopefully this helps some fellow Canucks.

Princess auto has been selling these for a little while again

And the best part is they have them for like $6.99 rather then ~$20 something.
