Riding/Camping the blizzard of '13

The roads leading west into New Hampshire were slick last Friday morning. The leading edge of the snowstorm the TV weather folks were calling the impending “Snowpocalypse” or “Deathstorm ’13″ in their typically understated fashion, was already dumping snow on me. I was astride my Russian-made Ural sidecar rig headed from Portland to Fryeburg. It was cold. My breath was freezing on the inside of my helmet shield, making it tough to see. Each time I passed a truck, whiteout conditions ensued for a few moments in the billowing powder. I was careening toward the state line to meet up with three other three-wheeled cyclists. We were going camping.

That’s right: camping.

It reminded me of a winter camping trip I went on in Maine many years ago.

Good on ya' for going in spite of the blizzard and having a great time. It looked fun....

Troy, great pics and video. We're sweltering though 36 deg C (about 97 F) at the moment so the snow pics were welcome.

Whoa! It never really gets that hot here. Except maybe for half a day in mid-July.

I was curious about the tent too, is it a commercial make or home made?

In my younger days, I spent more than a few winter nights in a canvas tent with wood stove, although it always made me nervous for fire risk, you cannot beat 80 degree temperatures to bask in in the middle of a frozen forest.

Nowadays, I use a propane heater but that outfit has me thinking about wood heat.

I forget what model Keith's is(1750 french), but mine is 1780 LOYALIST wedge. The tents were made in Conway, NH at http://tentsmiths.com/
All makes of tents can be to order, and mods can be done at anytime.

They make a good majority of repo tents for the movie industry.

Other than the standard infantry poncho/tent half, this photo seems to be representative of a larger tent with stove. Most of the images I can find resemble standard allied issue which is no surprise with the lend lease agreement during the war.

Yep, and a bunch of extra hands to help set up and take down. But I don't think I want to try winter camping in poncho halves.

I have an old canvas Baker tent down in the basement, I think I will haul it up and see how 30 years of storage has treated it.

Nice thing about that design is you just string rope and cut poles on site.
