Anyone interested in taking a class with me? I'm a terrible procrasentater & if I had a buddy taking the class with me, I'm more likly to take the class instead of sitting around planning on taking the class untill I lose the paperwork like I did the last time I had info on a riding class.

Oh SV is one hell of a school............

For dirt classes it seems the only things out there are Shane Watts and the like (could be wrong)
They are not good classes for "beginner minded" riders.
You would need some intermediate off-road skill or you might hurt yourself / bike at the class.
Seat time is a good instructor

There's a good DVD some guys from Colorado put together as well - Dual Sport Riding Techniques. Not sure what bike you have, but I thought it was a bigger bore DS....650??
This DVD was put together for riders of the bigger, heavier bikes and offers some really great tips. If I can track it down, you're welcome to borrow it. I used it when I was riding my 950 SER and 990 ADV in Colorado.....or, when those bikes were riding me

WP - I've got that Kenda on my 450 right now.....it was really cheap thru Chaparral. So far I really like it. But how does it wear?? Shorter lifespan that other stuff? I don't know much about riding, but I do know this: you cannot ride a big DS like a little one. If you do, you'll get yourself in some deep do-do.

The technique (or lack therof) I use on my Tenere is significantly different than what I use on the 450.

There is a very cool, but sort of "snobbish" 4x4/travel/offroad website that I used to hang out on called ExpeditionPortal.com. Meet some great guys when I had my Jeep, much more my speed of offroading, versus the more traditional "let's see how much shit I can break climbing this hill" local mentality.


Anyway, there are a number of guys on there that are convinced that they can go almost anyway that a 530KTM can, but they do it on GSAs. I don't think that they always ride that way, but they have this air that they CAN do it with a GSA, and do from what I've seen. My argument was WHY? It's rougher on the bike, not as fun, wears you out, etc. Of course, a lot of them are near the desert, but not all. Still, doesn't sound like fun to me, and that's why I ride.

Well I use to to through them pretty quick when I was in TN.... But then again I was riding a lot then..... but I think that you will get the same miles out of the TM that you get out of a 606 for much less money... I just looked on MC superstore and the Kenda is like $68 and the D606 is $93... for me that is a no brainer....

I have used the 606 a few times but i really have no love for them... here at home (loose sandy soil) the 606 seemed as though is would slip a little more on me... also I have torn side lugs on those... Never had a problem with the TM2...

WS, not sure where you're located, but over in Alpharetta, GA, the Honda MSF site offers dirt classes. They have a 2-day dirtbike thing where you do dirt coursework the first day and on the second day you review then hit the trails behind the facility. Decent singletrack stuff. It's inexpensive and they provide everything except food&board. They provide the bike, the gear, etc. The folks who teach it are a blast too.

Sounds stupid and egotistical to me. I'd be willing to bet any of them a 6 pack that they can't. I've seen some really good riders on GSA's, but the weight is limiting no matter how good you are. The undisputed king of big bike off-road is the KTM 950/990, but a good rider will be able to take a 530 to places even the 950/990 will never go.
