05 950, when to change fuel pump?
My bike has about 20,000 miles on it and I am planning on doing the TAT this summer.
Should I change out the fuel pump now? I have had no problems with it and I already own a fuel pump for the just in case. |

Order a Dr. Bean kit and keep the stock pump
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=807414 FYI... I had over 40k miles on the stock pump before the original points died. Now over 30k more miles on the same pump with Dr. Bean mod. Have fun on the TAT! -M

Replace the points with stock points or Dr Bean solid state kit.
No need to replace the whole pump.

Original points on pump went at 21K. Have about 4K on the Dr. Bean kit.

Maybe some grease at the shaft could lengthen the pump's life.
Since some inmates have reported seized rod, some grease could help with that.
Cheers.

My original points lasted about 25000 miles. The replacement points now have over 20000 miles, and are showing wear. I will be replacing them soon.
Whatever solution you choose, you should take care of it before leaving. The only symptom I got that the points were failing was that the engine quit running, period, one moment running fine, next moment dead.

OEM points are known to fail from 7000miles the shortest longevity. There are no reports of DrBean's system failing yet.
Cheers.

gefr; Can you explain the "how to" of where you were adding grease in your comment " Since some inmates have reported seized rod, some grease could help with that."
Ive got 20,000mi on original pump & points. Pulled the pump off & inspected the points and they are pretty worn. Ive already got a spare set of the K&L points to replace on mine. So whats to grease? Thanks

I would suggest greasing the rod
This would also obstruct water getting in there and also prevent the rod corroding in its guide.
Cheers.
