Other Options For Panama --> Cartegena??

Good afternoon gents

Looking to book ahead for the Stahlratte only to find the next sailing from Panama to Cartegena is 14 June which is approx another 1.5 months after when we wanted to cross.

Looking at other options, maybe flying, (but definitely not the fork and wheel breaking stuff that John Downs suffered)

Anyone chime in that has flown across cost wise?

(Posted on the Hubb too)

Thanks gents

Cheers Andi & Ellen

Your option is RoRo from Panama to Cartagena if that is your planned route (or viceversa).

Very few RoRo ships in the world let you sail with the cargo, I'm almost for sure this is not one of those few. Gimaldi Lines comes to mind, good way to go if you are heading to Europe afterward SA, make for a good time to catch up on the RR

You've got the same options as ever: fly the bike, ship by container, ship by RORO, ship by sailboat (Stahlratte is the favorite, but not the only one), ship by miscellaneous other boats on either Atlantic side (easiest) or Pacific (harder and more fraught).

Information is available to the avid searcher of past posts, blogs, and other forms of internet boasting. Mamallena hostel in PC and Cartagena has been generally reliable and not heavily biased. Or, you could ask here and on the HUBB, attracting a variety of well-intentioned but incomplete or wholly misguided answers (c.f. Gaston, above). No one is going to lay it all out for you, and even if they tried to do so, "truth" is forever in flux.

Hope that's helpful.

Heya Mark

Helpful no, bashing yes, again just asking what others have done and experiences obtained, not asking to lay it all out as we are doing our own and have done our own research but things change ALL the time.

Man if you have some good info chime in and be part of it but don't come on every thread boohooing us .... I am sure you have better things to do because I know we do.

My general approach is to offer the information you need to find accurate, complete answers yourselves. Above: Mamallena Hostel, plus a complete list of the possibilities--all of which are described elsewhere at length, repeatedly, on this forum and others. I did the same responding to your recent Cuba questions; I told you where the answers are to be found.

You might not like this, and you might not find it helpful. If so, my apologies. However, I'm noting that no one is answering your questions on this thread or that one--or at least, no one is answering accurately. The interesting bit is that there are people here, myself included, who know the answers but it appears to me that no one's offering them up. That being the case, you might want to think about why it might be true and whether there's anything you want to do differently. Your choice.

Since you're not finding my way of doing things helpful, I'll try not to respond henceforth. Here's hoping you find what you're looking for, including a rousing time in Cuba.

What Mark, you don't think I'm telling the truth about the RoRo or my time in Cuba

This is easy to do, maybe a little harder without a motorbike

Info is good as is a helping hand, hissing at us isn't, if it pains you so badly to come to our table with info then hey no worries you don't have too, it's only a request across the board not an order to you although you are very obedient ...well up till now .

We have appreciated the info just not the attitude, everyone is a dummy once and we know you were too, in three weeks we will be more knowledgeable about Cuba and I will be happy to pass on current info to new dummies ... not a drama.

Thanks for the rousing time thing we intend to do that, we are going to bus between locations and hire scoota here and there to take a good look around.

Leaving 27th February coming back 19 March hopefully long enough to see the place.

We will have to settle for a 50cc scoota I think ... shouldn't notice the difference between that and the SE I wouldn't think!

Yes and no. I know it's possible as a friend who visited years ago rented one. I don't know where though. There are a bunch for sale on classified ads as well. They're pretty common there from what I gather due to their decades of soviet ties. Your mission is clear.
