Rear tire

We are planning a 17 day trip ourselves in June/July. It's all the time I can take off, the alternative is just to "not go."
My question is, was your Hiedenau K60 brand new when you took off? I was going to mount a new rear right before departure, and was hoping to do the whole trip on one tire.
I've also heard the roads up north are a lot of rough chip and seal, that eats up tires.
FYI, leaving and returning from St Louis..
I don't want to be staring at chords, with a couple of thousand higher speed miles left to go on our return trip.
Great trip, by the way.
Thanks for posting!
Jeff

Hey Jeff,
Was in the same boat as you time wise, opted to go for it, was a bit of marathon at times but this trip for me from the get go was, me vs machine vs the great north country, no lazy ass beach vacation.
Yup my tire was brand new when I left. I ran that Hiedenau all day on day 16 with it showing cords, made it 600+mi like that, not proud of that but just wanted to try & limp her home. Everyone told me, the Heidenau should make it there & back, & that it is by far the best choise for high mileage dual purpose tire. I ran the Katoom pretty hard, the Alaskans warned me the chip seal on the Cassiar hwy would do it in & it did, & a good tire can not be had anywhere on the Cassiar. Everyone in Alaska runs Heides. With out planning ahead, You could run a half worn tire to Fairbanks, and pick up a new rear, Heidenaus are stocked at Trails End BMW & Adventure Cycle works, & quickly have it installed at Adventure Cycle works 24/7! Also there is a popular Yamaha dealer in Whitehorse,YT, that all moto travelers use & they'll put tires on anything I was told, & help you change your oil. Also there is very cool motorcycle campground in TOK....CJ Designs told me he regularly ships tires there for bikers to pick-up(doesn't have to go through Canada customs then). Or there is "THE DICK" in Dawson City, who helps people out(has a tire machine), look him up in the D2D (AK)area, but there is a reason they call him that....
safe travels
AJ

Thanks AJ,
Good info on the tires. I may start out with my old one on the bike, and carry a spare. I'm not sure we have a day where we'll have time for tire swaps.
We're booking it pretty hard every day.
I read another RR about a guy that went through a Heidi pretty quickly up there. But I think he was really loaded down.
Hmmm

Great ride report! Glad to know it can be done in a short time, I think I might be able to squeeze out 3 weeks of vacation next year, might have to put it on the radar!

My offer stands. I'm only 5 mins from the MKE airport, the katoom is yours to use, spring & fall have been mild here the past few. I'm just waiting for that pic of me eating chicken in Chicken to appear I was hungry damn it....

When I read your PM this morning I never put two and Two together.
I really enjoyed your ride report too.
I had said you really missed out on the South Canol but I wouldn't have the guts to do that stuff by myself. I probably would not even go up there and stay on the paved roads all by myself.
Maybe some day a bunch of us off road kind of guys can make another Dirt oriented trip to Alaska.
South Canol, North Canol, Dempster, Nahanni Range road, Grounhog Creek, The dirtier the better.

Great report AJ.

"the R model adventure only comes with a 12mo/12k warranty, mine went out of warranty right as I got back in the states Odometer showed 13300mi when I got home. Southeast sales got KTM to warranty my rear rotor & rear shock splash guard(cracking)"

Got my '12 990 R at SE Sales as well. Like you I've received excellent service from them regarding warranty support and workmanship from their service crew.

Looking forward to CADVR this August, will see you there.
